Laptop connects to strong signal but immediately disconnects
I'm having trouble connecting a laptop (Vista) to a wireless network. It's a Linksys modem with the D-Link AirPlus Extreme G Wireless Router.

The signal is strong; always Very Good or Excellent, but the moment it connects, it immediately disconnects a few seconds later and I am unable to use the Internet whatsoever. Nothing I've done so far has been able to resolve the issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Does it actually connect (you can access the router or access the internet) or does it just try to get an IP configuration?

You don't by chance have mac address filtering enabled on your router do you?

No, I cannot access the Internet at all. I'll connect to a network, and I'm given a message saying that it's been successfully connected, but then it immediately disconnects afterward so I still can't do anything.

How do I check if MAC address filtering is enabled or not?

Thank you.

Login to your router and disable encryption and MAC Address filtering and try to connect that way. If successful you can probably re-enable encryption and reconnect.

If unsuccessful please try to connect both ethernet and wireless and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I am unable to log into the router from the laptop, but I have been able to from this desktop PC which I use to access the forums here online: It says IP filtering is picked over MAC filters but I cannot disable WEP because I do not have admin privileges ().

Another issue I would like to mention is that this desktop PC disconnects every 77 seconds or so (I counted) and then immediately reconnects. I can use the Internet after it reconnects, but it's a terrible nuisance.

Also, there's a Macbook has trouble with the connection going on and off, whether if it's in the same room the router is in or two stories up above it.

Factor default the router, this will disable all WEP and MAC filtering. You will lose your configuration doing this, but it will rule out that the router itself is bad

I'm unable to do so because I do not have admin privileges.

Why don't you have admin rights?

"Admin" isn't an acceptable username and I can only log into the router through "user."

If this helps, I'm actually able to connect to the Internet on the laptop now if I turn off the modem, router, and desktop PC, turn on the modem, wait 45 seconds, turn on the router, wait 45 seconds, and then the desktop PC. Then the Internet works just fine as it should be. However, I think if the PC shuts down, the laptop can't access the connection anymore and the same problem will always keep coming back.
