Hmm...

I really can't find any firewall on either computer other than the standard windows one (which I don't think is the problem).

Is there possibly something hidden lurking around that I don't know about... or some other kind of software that could produce the same symptoms... or maybe something that is a firewall but isn't calling itself a firewall just to annoy me...?

Ok... I've attached the log files... I know the problem isn't solved yet but thanks a lot for all your help so far, it's really cool that you do this and that you have the patience to stick with one problem for so long.

By looking you have the AVG Antivirus installed which through my experience a lot of the time blocks unneccesary things. Have you tried disabling the Firewall on AVG and then tried pinging?

At this point I'd start disabling groups of startup applications and services using MSCONFIG on PC2 and seeing when you can ping it successfully by name.

Ok...

I tried using that msconfig thing to the best of my ability and I really don't think I know what I'm doing with it... but even with no start-up applications running it couldn't ping PC1. I tried narrowing down the services running but I found that a bit trickier cos I wasn't sure exactly what is needed to get the network running anyway (I tried just running the list of services you posted earlier but it wouldn't even connect to the router when I did that).

Maybe I'm not doing it right but I did one other thing...

There is a 3rd PC that I don't really use any more so I haven't got a wireless adapter for it yet, I thought I'd try getting the main two running first. But for the sake of test I decided to get it going, and installed PC2's wireless adapter on PC3.

And it gave me the same results: Internet runs perfectly fine, no network, can't ping PC1.

Are you sure there isn't something that could be wrong with the hardware or the network configurations?

I can't imagine the NIC being defective, this isn't a defective hardware kind of issue.

It almost has to be something running on the machine. Is this a nVidia based machine by any chance? They have a low level firewall that you can install that sometimes throws us for a loop.

I believe it may be an nVidia machine (my apologies, I don't know it very well, I'm sort of borrowing it for a year or so).... at least I did see a lot of nVidia related programs in MSCONFIG.

Ah... no sorry it's not I don't think... it appears there's just some graphics utilities that have the nVidia brand on it, I think the graphics card may be nVidia.

Well, some process is running in normal mode that is blocking your network access.

Well, you appear to have some malware on PC2.

Perhaps it's time to see if we can attract the attention of a security person to take a look, I think we should address that first.

And it's an infostealer as well so I suggest that you change all of your passwords using a clean computer and don't use this one for any financial transactions until it's cleaned up.

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.

Note: During this process, it would help a great deal and be very much appreciated if you would refrain from installing any new software or hardware on this machine, unless absolutely necessary, until the clean up process is finished as it makes our job more tedious, with additional new files that may have to be researched, which is very time consuming.

Also, please do not run any security programs or fixes on your own as doing so may compromise what we will be doing. It is important that you wait for instructions.
