Router settings help needed.. please
Hello all, Im new here so hello to everyone, quick bit about me ... Im 27, live in the uk and im a web applications developer
Ok .. hopefully someone can help me resolve an issue im having..
Due to the recession im still living with my parents and to save dosh we share an internet connection.. 2mb soon to be 10..
I enjoy playing xbox live and my parents like to browse, unfortunately at the same times of day...
I was hoping someone could help me in setting up my router to stop my xbox hogging the connection leaving at least a reasonable amount of the connection for the folks to surf without getting on at me about pages taking ages to load.
My router has a QoS engine and I (possibly wrongly) believe this may be able to help me....
My router is a DIR-625
Thanks in advance..
Paul

Yes, the QoS will help....however, depends on the router what you can or can't configure...
ideally, you'll need to set QoS at an IP level, because the Xbox uses port 80 (the same as web browsing) - So, (if you can) set your parent's computer's IP a higher priority that the IP of the Xbox
Also, set DNS (port 53) to high/highest priority, the set web/http (port 80) to the next highest setting...all other services should then pass on standard or lower priorities..

Hi thanks for the info.. checked and yes my router supports ip address qos... with priority between 0 and 255... what settings would you suggest i set for each machine.. there are 2 pcs a laptop and my xbox on the network... though never more than 2 at a time usually... with my parents being the main one i want to make sure always has a good connection.. but without killing my xbox connection..
hopefully set them so its 60 / 40 in terms of bandwidth with my xbox being 60.. its not so much priority for my folks pc.. more making sure there connection is steady when im on..
thanks..

Unfortunately, you're talking about bandwidth throttling....which most home routers don't do...
QoS gives priority to traffic.... bandwidth throttling splits the channel into pieces (to give you your 60/40 etc)
Experiment with the settings, but give DNS highest priority (to everyone), the give http priority next (to parent's web browsers)...then the xbox
In reality....most parents only web browse 'light' sites (news, forums etc)...they probably won't be doing huge downloads....so, I'm guessing, it won't affect your gaming that much...
Give it a try

If you want real bandwidth throttling, look around for a router that's compatible with
DD-WRT
, which offers that capability.
