Solved: Cannot connect through wireless cards but only with phone Nokia N95 modem
Hi, I have Sky Broadband which comes with a Sagem router and I have a BELKIN Wireless G Desktop Network Card which for the first 6 months connected fine, although sometimes it took a while to find connection and dropped out a few times but it did connect in the end. It then started failing to find connection at all so started using partner's Nokia N95 (which has a built-in Modem) and has always connected first time and can always see connection. Today I brought a LINKSYS Wireless-N USB Network Adapter with Dual-Band which can see the connection and my computer can now see connection through "MY Network Places" but can still not connect at all but phone is again still working.

A few months ago I also tried another BELKIN card but a much better one to what I've got but again it didn't work and if it managed to connect it was only once and then couldn't find connection again so took it back.
We live in a granny flat built on back of partner's mum's house and router is by her front door as that's where phone line is and the computer is in our flat with one wall in between and is approximately 10-15 metres apart. So I originally thought this was the problem but now because phone has no problem and never has even before when we just used to go on internet on phone not through computer I'm assuming it must be something else.

Can someone please help me as I'm now at a loss as to what else to try and I'd like to be able to use internet whenever I want, not just when partner is at home or without him having to leave his phone at home for me! I have also tried moving router closer in his mum's with longer cables in there but again made no difference, even managed to get it to stretch near our front door but still made no difference!

I don't know whether I need something different from a wireless card as phone says it's a modem?!?!

OS is Windows XP.

Are you using XP's Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) or Belkin's utility to manage the wireless? And are you sure that only one is running? If multiple wireless clients are running they will conflict, and can give the symptoms you are experiencing.

Please try to connect and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi, thanks for your reply. No I have tried both ways, with networking cards or usb activated or by doing it through windows and earlier when I forgot I had it set up to do it through windows the linksys usb would not even try connecting while windows was trying to search for connections so had to stop one to even try the other. Here is what came up when I ran what you said:

Which utility are you using now?

Do you detect the Wi-Fi network? If not, are you sure that another computer does detect it? In other words, are you sure that SSID broadcast is not disabled?

If you do detect the network, exactly what happens when you try to connect?

In the ipconfig /all the wireless was disconnected, so I couldn't tell much at all.

Hi
As ur unable to connect with belkin wireless utility,we can try by enabling
wireless zero configuration.
To enabled WZC
>start .....Run
type in "services.msc".
>scroll down to bottom ,u can find wireless zero configuration.
>right click on it & select restart.
>once services are restarted, close services window.
>Again click on start & select run
>type in "ncpa.cpl",Now right click on wireless connection & select properties.
>select wireless connection tab.
>make sure that "use windows to configure my wireless connection" is checked, and click on OK
>again right click on the wireless connection & select view availble wireless connection.
>Nw scan for the wireless connection.
>once u find the n/w ,try to connect use security key with u have assigned for the n/w.(if ur wireless n/w is secured).
>Else try to change wireless channels in the router .

Hi, thank you for your comments, I have tried accessing router settings but page will not load up, just keeps coming up with error message so am in process of trying to contact Sky to find out why I cannot load page and get through to settings and also see if they have anything to suggest.

I did however do what you suggested (using run commands) and also tried reinstalling both wireless devices - card and usb - and trying with only one enabled at a time, including making sure windows networking was disabled while trying each out and still no luck - belkin cannot find network at all but linksys is still able to see it and has come up with 45% signal strength however the nokia can also not see network at the moment and when I click on network places it comes under "dial-up" category so presuambly this means phones does not act same way as wireless cards or in fact is maybe not even using my Sky broadband perhaps?!

I am going to have a look at router tomorrow and restart and perhaps try repositioning as this used to work when changing angle it sits at.

I also don't know if this helps but ran ipconfig again and managed to catch it while it said it was connected or maybe nearly connected for a second and this is what came up:

Currently trying to connect with linksys adapter and if I click to search for available networks it can find mine (now at 51% strength) and when I click connect it says it is connected for about a minute and then says it is not connected but the icon in the bottom of my screen (computer icon regarding internet connection) does not say its connected even when linksys says it is. It is currently saying limited connection but realisticallly it means NO connection!! However as shown by pictures of linksys control screen it states no signal or link quality when it is connected.

With respect to the Linksys adapter in post # 6 ...

(from a JohnWill post)

IP addresses of 0.0.0.0 are normally caused by one of the following.

Diagnosis:
1.DHCP Service not running.
2.Duplicate IP address on the network.
3.Bad NIC card drivers.
4.Defective NIC hardware.

Resolution:
1.Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.
2.Turn off ALL of the computers and other network connected devices, reboot the router, then restart all the computers and other network devices.
3.Check for upgraded drivers and/or reload the Network drivers.
4.Replace the Network Interface Card.

Problem Solved
Hi, thanks for everyone's comments and help but after a bit of exploring and some help from my dad we discovered after changing wireless adapters as Belkin one was dead/rubbish we discovered it was a distance problem as wireless works fine if you're near router but my PC is too far away and there are an extraordinary amount of wireless connections in the area but have now just run a wire from house (main phone line) into our flat and can now use wireless if wanted but now just plugged straight in which is brilliant. But thanks again for anyone's help when trying to fix it any other way!
