Some things you can try here, listed in the order you should try them.
  1. For wireless connections, remove all the stored wireless profiles and search for networks. You'll have to enter the encryption key again, which is sometimes the issue for connection problems.
  2. For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
  3. For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
  4. Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.
  5. Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
  6. Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Was there any apparent difference when using various channels (especially 1, 6 and 11)?

Do you detect any other medium to strong signals?

Any 2.4 GHz cordless phones in the area?

Have you tried with encryption disabled to see if that makes any difference?

Any other computers using the same wireless network? If so, what is their experience?

That's a different issue. Some router/adapter/OS combinations just don't work right after Sleep/Standby/Hibernate. If updating the driver doesn't help there's little to be done but try a different adapter.

ok,
well, i stand corrected...it has magically started connecting. have tested it 5 times and connection happens pretty quick...however sometimes getting an error but it goes away immediately...as long as it's connecting i'm satisfied...i will mark this as solved for now...i think if it truly is solved the update driver for the nic was the solution because my driver was from 2006 the new one has a few more features. and is much newer. thanks for help. i will now go to another category and bug you guys about remote wake up. ha
thanks again

Shopping. For a new router. Probably.

You've got pretty much the same problems connecting with two computers, right? I think we've covered all the potential fixable causes. If you can test one of those computers with another wireless network (friend's, public hotspot, borrow a router, ...) and don't have the problems then I'm confident that it's time to shop for a new router.

if one computer will connect while the other doesnt and it could be either machine then how could it be the router? i mean sometimes just resetting the wireless card solves it...my signal is not always the greatest but my computer is picking up the network it says networks are available and it shows my network name in the network and sharing center....also i have the same problem as alot of people with vista sometimes when it does connect it's local access only. i am able to ping the router. after i did the suggestions you guys offered i was able to connect all day yesterday... but today well was a different story although i am connected now. i called my isp there were no problems the tech said "reset your router" well no **** that's what i am trying to stop having to do. this should be fixable heres a link of some pretty frustrated IT guys http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...-635a2f141f0d/

this forum is over almost 2 years old and there are hundreds of members at tecnet.microsoft that have posted the same thing....i might add that i have an xp machine and it stays connected. there has got be a solution to this or at least a comparable work around. if not, microsoft has sure lived up to the bad rap they've been getting. i personally think that this may well be a vista issue. i would like to start over with everything and get specific instructions on setting this network up. i mean i have already spent weeks on this researching and bugging professionals like you guys. i cant remember when ive been so frustrated about a stupid computer problem. can we go through everything from beginning to end or do you think that its going to present the same results? this problem started out of the blue and that is also a common truth with the posts in the link i sent you. maybe i could reset everything in vista back to its original state i have other ways to access the web so i can completely tear this system down and redo it. i hate to keep bugging you.

maybe you folks like a good challenge...fix this for me and i will dance at your next wedding.
thanks
