On the desktop in Printers and Faxes unshare the printer and then share it again. Use a short, simple shared name.

On the laptop in My Network Places use 'view workgroup computers', double click on the desktop's icon. Printer show now? (I assumed the computers are in the same workgroup.)

Smile Laptop to PC printing
Clicking the desktop's icon only opens the print queue box. Right clicking the left icon the laptop's screen shot produces this message:
You do not have the appropriate access rights for this server.

That totally confuses and stumps me. I have no clue how that happens.

When I go to printers and faxes and double click the printer icon it opens the print queue box where the files wanting to print would be. Is that not normal? Right clicking the left icon the laptop's screen shot produces this message:
You do not have the appropriate access rights for this server. I was hoping this would give you a clue. Does it mean the desktop is not giving the laptop permission...if so can I change this?

Oh! Yeah, that's standard. I thought you were talking about the icon of the desktop in My Network Places. Is file and printer sharing enabled on the desktop? Is the printer on the desktop shared? Is any non-Windows firewall configured to allow the desired access?

If/when the answers to the above are all 'yes' and if the desktop is XP try ...

Possible Fix for corruption “Access Denied” Problem:

Using notepad create a file named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- cut after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- cut before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Restart and see if this helps with the access issue.

Printer sharing is on but file sharing I don't understand what you mean because I thought you just turn on a folder you want to share?
I don't understand the following can you put it in simpler terms please?
Using notepad create a file named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- cut after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- cut before this line -----------------

Simply copy and paste the lines between the dashed lines and paste them into a notepad file as instructed. Then double click that file and say yes to the registry merge question.

In XP file and printer sharing go together, so if you have printer sharing enabled you must have file sharing enabled also. If you want to double check ...

In Network Connections right click on your connection and select ‘Properties.’ If not already there, install or add a check mark for “Client for Microsoft Networks, “File and Printer sharing …” and “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).”

Thank you for your simple explanation and after trying it, unfortunately it still does not work.

Thanks for the simple explanation and everything through network connections is as you say it should be.

When you get to this screen...

I'd like you to double click the machine that has the printer shared on it and post that screen shot. That is what I showed you in my example, you have never gone that far so we can see if the printer is visible on the network.

Again, here's my example after browsing to the machine with the shared printer (in my case two of them).

Good. But there are no shared printers on that machine. Just two that are (directly) connected to some other machine.
