Switch (Brocade Silkworm 200E) Serial Console - how?
Hi, How do I access the serial console on my 200E? I have attached a serial cable between the (online) switch and a windows machine and started up Hyperterminal (9600 8-N-1) in WS2003. Hyperterminal says "connected" but there is no data appearing in the window, and the switch does not seem to respond to keystrokes. I have read that after connecting the serial cable, the switch should be restarted - but I was hoping to avoid restarting the switch. I have never connected to a switch's serial console before - is a reboot normal practice when performing this procedure? Many thanks, Kenny

No. Reboots of network gear to access the serial console port is not normal. I suspect the same goes with the Brocade. Are you using the proper serial cable? You also may need to mess around with the flow control setting. Sometimes I ran into problem connections and for whatever reason adjusting the flow control to none or hardware seems to fix it.
