Excellent connection, but no internet?
A couple of days ago our router stopped working, so we had to exchange it for a different one. Upon plugging it in, both computers (two laptops) recieved a message about limited connectivity. After running through the prompted high-speed internet installation, one of the laptops was fine and running the wireless correctly.

Now, the laptop was wasn't prompted to install the wireless still cannot connect to it. It didn't automatically update the IP address, so we changed it manually (exactly to what was being read by the other laptop.) Although it got rid of the limited connectivity error message, it didn't allow access to the internet.

It's a Dell Inspiron B130 with Windows XP, and I'm currently connected through Ethernet. The Ethernet only works if it's plugged in while I'm turning on the computer, but I've disabled all start-up programs from activating, assuming that there was a program blocking it at start-up. Although this does work, if I unplug the cable while the computer is on, it wont reconnect. The only program that wouldn't turn off on shut-down was Avast! Antivirus, so I deleted it from the system and I intend to reinstall later. Even with it gone, it didn't change anything.

These are the ipconfig/All results:

Hi and welcome to TSG!
Is that the ipconfig from the working or non-working computer?

OK:Your ipconfig shows an apparently working lan connection.
Please supply the following>
Make and models of modem and router.
Name of ISP
Go into my network places.
View network connections.
What do you see there ?

What is the make and model of the adapter? Also, do you have encryption enabled in the router?

D: I'm not entirely sure we have a modem? From what I can see, the phone line is hooked into a single box, which I assume is the router. It's probably just my computer ignorance coming into play, though.

The router is a Embarq 660 series.
ISP: Embarq?
In view network connections, it has Internet Connection (Connected), Wireless Network Connection (Connected) and Local Area Connection (Connected).

Dx I hope I answered all of these correctly, you can probably tell I'm not very computer literate.

I really wouldn't know anything about the router. xx; Thanks so much in advanced, I know it must be difficult trying to help someone who has barely any idea how to answer basic questions. xD;

In the command prompt, try pinging yahoo.com or www.google.com.

Should I disconnect the Ethernet before doing that?

Your embarq is a modem/router.
Here is a link to the setup manual.
Let's make sure that the setup is correct.
I would follow the steps there ,just to confirm proper cabling and options.
https://www.embarq.com/embarq/refDoc...dhcp_Guide.pdf

Then,on your wireless connection, let's make sure that this has been done.
To enable netbios over tcpip

_
Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP for 2K/XP
1. Right click the network properties for the connection in question.
2. Select Properties
3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
4. Select Properties
5. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
o Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
o Click Properties
o Click Advanced
o Select the WINS Tab Above
o Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.

And this :
To obtain dns and ip address automatically

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
• Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Local Area Connection Status window.
• Click the Properties button to open the Local Area Connection Properties window.
• Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
• TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
• Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
• Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
• Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
• Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

I did all three things, going through the wizard that I was directed to on the Embarq page, but with no luck.

I did change the NETBIOS over TC/IP, but that didn't do anything to solve the problem.

The final set of instructions were already in place.

I don't have the laptop that works at the moment, it's my Dads and he's at work.

Yes, they both worked fine. I was actually on this laptop when the old modem stopped working.

My Dad set up the old modem, but I'm not entirely sure that's what you mean.

OK.The things that look strange to me in your wireless ipconfig are that dhcp is not enabled nor is autoconfiguration. So that bothers me a bit.
In the mean time, you might want to try this,to see if we can plug and play this adapter to life.
Device manager/network adapters/wireless adapter.
Driver.note the name and location of the driver.
delete the driver and re boot the pc.
IPconfig /all and see if anything has changed.Like the ipaddress and DHCP enabled.
I just re-read your first post.
The modem/router is supposed to assign the ip addresses out of the DHCP pool
