Exclamation Vista Desktop/XP Laptop - Home Network
I am trying to hook up my windows vista desktop and my windows xp laptop so i am able to file share over my home network. I currently have my desktop networked with another vista laptop, but i can't get the xp laptop to connect to the network. I am however able to view all computers under the network screens. I have tried just about everything i could read on the internet to fix the problem. I am getting the error message "i don't have permission"
Yes the workgroup is set up with the same name on all computers, i have tried disabling windows firewall on both machines but with no luck. I am running free avg antivirus i do not believe this is doing anything. The only thing i can think of is it being something with the tpc/ip configs. My desktop is hooked up through my linksys router through ethernet cable, both laptops are wireless. Any help is greatly appreciated, i am at a loss with what to do, i know it can be done because i did it about a year ago, moved then came back and i think a few windows updates later settings are different.
Desktop - Windows Vista 64bit
Laptop - Windows Vista 32bit
Laptop - Windows XP 32bit

Welcome to TSG:
Think we should cover all teh basics of vista and XP co-existing.
Here is a link that covers most all the tricks of this.

First though I would disable encryption and again make sure all firewalls are disabled.

If I read your post correctly, this is a sharing issue, but later on you seemed to indicate that the XP pc could not access the internet..
If so,that may be a separate issue..If so,we can deal with that later.

Some usuall causes why Vista will not share when File and Printer setting is turned on in Network and Sharing and they are in the same Workgroup

1. Vista requires an accessing computer to have an account with a password on it. That means if you didn't enter a pasword when you first set up the XP, you need to add one now. Can be anything but a blank. A single character will do.

2. On Vista the network is set to Public instead of Private. If the network is set as Public, only computers with an account (user name/password) on the Vista have sharing access. If a Private network, anyone on the network can share unless Password Protection is turned on.

3. Password Protection turned on. Accessing computer is asked for a password before sharing is permitted.

4.Sharing has not been authorized for a specific File or Folder. Permission has not been granted to Everyone or a specific account under Sercurity settings. Sharing and Security settings for each File or Folder can be accessed by right-clicking the name and selecting Properties.

5. The firewall may not be set for sharing. Windows firewall should be set automatically when you turn on sharing. 3rd party firewalls ay have to be manually setup

If you use Norton Internet Security, you will need to change the internal firewall settings. Norton's firewall is preset to disallow file sharing within a network.

Also, make sure the XP computer has the LLTD protocol installed.

Actually, LLTD has no bearing on file/print sharing, it's just used to allow Vista's "eye candy" network map to include the XP computers.
