Solved: Folders not accessible on network
I have a home network that consists of 3 computers. Recently the folders on one of those computers could not be accessed by the other 2. That computer can access folders on the other 2, and the other 2 can access folders on each other.

The computer who's folders can not be accessed, will be referred to as computer number 1.
That computer is running Windows XP Professional SP3; the others are XP Home SP3.
The network is set up using a wired router.

I have checked to see that file sharing has been enabled and folder permissions have given full control to everyone.

I am using Comodo free firewall with the Windows firewall disabled. and thought that something may have been configured wrong. I disabled Comodo and enabled windows firewall without it making any difference.
The computer names are unique and the workgroup is the same on all computers. All computers show up as workgroup computers.
Computer 1 is recognized on the network, and appears in network places but the folders which show are not able to be accessed.

At this point, I am at a loss to figure what else might be checked to determine why this is occurring.
I'd appreciate any suggestions that would help me resolve this issue.

Uninstall Comodo all around and see if that helps.

Uninstalled Comodo and rebooted.
Problem still there.
Disabled Windows firewall and nothing changed.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Would running the Network Setup Wizard on the problem computer be a reasonable thing to try?

Yes, try using the Network Setup Wizard. And is Simple File Sharing enabled or disabled?

And perhaps this Microsoft Help & Support article will help.

Also for the computer that won't share please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Before running the Network Wizard, I'll await a reply on this.
If/when I run the Network Wizard, would it be advisable to delete any sharing or network configurations that are now in use? If so, how?

Can you ping both ways from/to the problem computer by computer name?

Let's see this from the problem computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

nbtstat -n

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I can ping from and to the problem computer using both IP address and computer name.

Do ANY other of the computers have the line:

..__MSBROWSE__.<01> GROUP Registered

when you do a nbtstat -n on them? If so, this indicates that some firewall component is blocking NETBIOS broadcasts to this machine. This line indicates that the machine is the master browser, and there should only be one in a network.

If no other computer is the master browser, this has to be some sort of firewall product that is blocking access to this system.

I see Comodo is still installed, I'd really use Revo Uninstaller and totally uninstall that until you get this working.

Comodo is not showing in the start menu, add-remove programs in the control panel, or in Revo Uninstaller.
Could there be an entry in the registry that wasn't removed when I did the uninstall?

If so, and it should be removed what is the best way?

File sharing is disabled.
If that is what you meant, that's your problem.

Assuming you mean that Simple File Sharing is disabled, I suggest that you try with it enabled. If you can access the shared files that way it means that your problem is likely that you don't have the Advanced File Sharing permissions set properly.

If not successful, what is the exact complete error message when you try to access one of those folders?
