Need help choosing new router
You're not going to believe this, but I've been using the same router for the past 8 years. It's a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router (Model BEFSR11 I think) and it's worked fine up to now, although I never have gotten the kind of speeds I'm supposed to get from my cable company. I use it to network two computers.

I've just bought new computers (YEAH!!!) and they are going to come with an "integrated PCIe Gb NIC ethernet" card. I'll be honest and admit I have no idea what any of that means.

I think it's probably time for me to upgrade my router as well but I haven't the foggiest idea what I should be looking for. My cable company provides downloads up to 20Mbps, uploads up to 4Mbps (well, it's supposed to ....) if that makes a difference and the router I have now is equipped with a 10/100 switch (if THAT matters).

As you can see, I know NOTHING about routers and such. I had someone set up the LAN for me originally and every time I moved, I just kept everything the same. I'll probably hire someone to set this up for me as well, but I would like to buy the right router before hand or at least know what I should buy (and maybe I'll even take a chance and do it myself!). By the way, I do NOT want a wireless ... the computers are close to each other and I prefer a wired connection.

So, any information and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you'll probably end up with a wireless router, simply because almost all of the current generation offer wireless capability. You can simply disable the wireless section in the configuration, instant wired router.

I like the D-Link DIR-615, I have one here, and it has no trouble supporting my full 20/5 fiber connection. They're pretty inexpensive and I've had good luck with mine.

JohnWill --

I didn't know that about wireless routers! (Well, I didn't know ANYTHING about routers at all ....). I will look into the D-Link you mentioned. Thanks for the suggestion.

Wireless is so popular that virtually all the standard routers that are around are wireless.
