Solved: Good signal, no connection... why?
I've recently purchased an Asus G50vt . Love the computer, except I can't connect to the internet via Wifi. Ethernet cable works great though

A list of networks are avaliable, (I'm living on campus) and all have fairly high signal strengths. When I try to connect it always says windows can not connect to the network. When I diagnose the problem it says either my computer is not in range of the network (which is not true because all of my buddies laptops work just fine in my room, except mine) OR... it says the wireless settings saved on my laptop don't match the settings of the network (a more plausable explanation).

I'd like to know the settings other Vista users have for their wireless settings to see if mine match.

The network I'm trying to connect to is unsecured and has an 802.11gn radio type.

Help if you can,
THanxs

Hi:I don't think we will assist you in trying to use some one else's bandwidth,if that is the assistance you are asking for.

No no..., it is the school's network where I attend. Sorry I should have made that clear. Freed-Hardeman. It's an open network to all students and staff.

OK;I would think you have at least two options.
If your school has an IT staff, they should be able to give you the network settings to use for your operating system.
If your friends laptops work and they have the same operating system as you, then their wireless settings and wireless manager settings should be looked at and compared to yours.

Yea, If I can't figure it out on my end by tonight, then tomorrow I'm going to IT.

I'm starting to think it's more of a Vista problem then anything else though-

-School also just implemented the IKnow program, (changing to Mac basically), I wonder if that may have anything to do with their wireless config. not working with mine.

I appreciate the help.

Hi Betterness

I was having the same problem and this worked for me.
Right click My Computer and select "Manage"
Click "services" inn the left pane
In the right pane, scroll down until you find WLAN AutoConfig
Make sure it is Started and set to Automatic

My wireless net will occasionally go AWOL, and I just flip the switch for the WiFi off, wait 5 seconds and switch it back on. Comes back to a connection and full speed everytime..

Your mileage may differ..

Connect by ethernet and try to connect by wireless and show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Thanks. Unfortunately no clues there.

About all I can suggest is to make sure you have the latest driver for the Intel adapter from your laptop manufacturer's web site. Many Vista wireless issues are caused by driver problems. Do not rely on Windows update or Device Manager's 'update driver.'

Go to the web site and download the correct driver.

Yea I tried that but it was set to the correct settings, I tried restarting it but nothing changed...

Ok I have kept some things away that I probably should have brought up at the start... now that I think about it:

Windows says I'm either too far away from the provider, or my settings don't match the settings of the network. The settings must be fine, because I can access the network wirelessly at different areas (closer areas).

But my old laptop could connect from my location, and everyone elses can too. So is there something wrong with my laptops range??

It still doesn't make sense to me why I can view a connection, with Great signal strength, and not be able to connect to it.

Very frustrating.
