Angry Windows Explorer crash when modifying network settings
I have not been able to connect to the Internet using the network I set up a few weeks ago. I'm using a Linksys G router and Scientific Atlanta modem.

Whenever I try to connect, I get the error "Windows cannot connect" for various reasons. Previously it was "Windows received no response from the wireless networking point" which perplexes me since it detects network strength at 5 bars. Now the error is "Network settings saved on this computer do not match those required by the network."

When I try to modify the encryption key saved in the Network and Sharing Center, right after I click "Save," I get an error that says "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and that Windows is trying to fix the problem. Then Explorer crashes, disappears and reboots.

I appreciate any help-- I'm at my wits' end trying to figure out the problem here.

This is a Windows installation corruption issue of some sort. I'd try an SFC pass.

What version and patch level of Windows are you using?

I'm using Windows Vista Home (under duress, not by choice). What do you mean by patch level? The last update Windows installed was KB97065, which I see has something to do with time zone correction. Looking at the update history, there are a lot of failed updates.

Also, what is an SFC pass? I guess I'm not as savvy as I thought. Thanks for the help, JohnWill.

Right click on Computer - Properties. That should show a page which will include whether you have Vista Home Basic or Vista Home Premium and the Service Pack (SP) level.

Thanks-- it told me I had 838 problems to be fixed...then I called Linksys and they were able to fix my connection via remote access for ten dollars

Do you recommend buying the full version of the Uniblue software? 838 is a frighteningly large number.

SFC sees that many issues? WOW! I've never seen anything like that, care to post a screen shot so we can see what you're seeing?

Actually, 828. I can't put the image on here because it's not hosted, and the "add image" button asks for a URL...

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to TSG, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
