Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I think that our ISP is AT&T

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband router WRT54G2 V1

Wireless

not sure on encrytion

Windows XP (home or pro????)

Internet Explorer

I haven't tried any of those

Another computer uses this network and it works properly

It says "The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexedecimal characters" when I enter the correct password for (my sister's) wireless network.

Sometimes it says it's connected (randomly) but I can't access any websites. And other times (randomly) it says something like "cannot find certificate to log you onto TheJessicaNetwork"

I suggest you try some of my suggestions since you obviously aren't connecting at this point. Also, I see that you have ICS enabled, I'd disable that.

What? If all 4 router LAN ports are being used I can understand why you would have to temporarily disconnect one device, but if that is going to disable your "whole families internet" we probably need a complete description of your network.

Consult your router's manual for how to operate it. If you don't have it on CD download it from Linksys's web site.

Hi John.FYI;The Disabling ICS link appears to be not good.
Also, for my learning, how did you determine that ics was enabled ?

Since that router has four wired ports, you obviously don't have to "disable everyone's Internet" to test.

pedroguy, the line IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes is the clue for ICS.

Also, double-check your router and your computer's settings.

You want to be using WPA-PSK (maybe WPA2-PSK)... with TKIP or AES. Though your standard WPA-PSK with TKIP is going to work more universally on almost ALL WiFi Network adapters/Drivers... It has been around longer, so it should be supported by more equipment

If possible, ensure Windows is managing yoru Wireless Network instead of a third-party supplicant.

On the Authentication Tab, ensure you Uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network." More likely than not, Windows is asking you for a PEAP (Protected EAP) certificate to secure RADIUS (802.1x) communications with your router.

If you have any further trouble, just delete the network adapter and re-install it (just a device manager refresh if you are luckey). That WILL flush the settings (if configured via Widnows Wireless Zero).

okay I disabled internet connect sharing and made sure windows was managing my wireless ( i think) and it connected me to the internet... i thought my problems were over until I clicked on internet explorer and found that it still won't go to any websites it says it's couldn't connect...
and John, I felt pretty dumb when you said that I could test the internet by using a cord because it has four ports but then I realized I don't have a cable to connect it with so I can't do that...
more help please!!!! =]

Buy an Ethernet cable, they're cheap!

You said all four of the ports were in use, so obviously you have a cable that you can use for the test, it's the one you're going to disconnect to allow you to connect!
