Question Solved: Cannot connect to my wireless router or print...?
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I am experiencing connecting to my wireless network.

I have set my router up correctly and have got an internet connection. This is a Belkin Wireless N router and modem.

I have connected to this a QNAP TS-209Pro NAS which in turn has a USB printer connected to it.

I am now trying to hook up my Dell M1530 laptop to the network and I can see it but not connect. This is using VISTA home premium.

I have allocated a static IP address to the NAS and I have allocated the same DNS entry (primary) as is shown in the belkin config screen.

When the laptop is wired to the router I can print through the NAS and I can surf.

When I try to connect to my network, it attempts to connect, but times out after entering the key.

If I enter a fixed IP and all the other details in the IPv4 properties, I can connect but not print (I can print only through Adobe PDF)......

So, seeing as I have spent two days looking at this, I wondered if there was anyone out there who could shed some light?

Do I need to enter the primary and secondary DNS from my ISP into the router and enter the same on all peripherals?

Should I be able to leave everything at automatic?

Why would it work when connected hardwired in and not when wirelessed in (when I haven't changed any config?)

Any help would be REALLLLLLLY welcomed.

Cheers in advance.
Andy

I'm confused, I don't know what isn't working on the network. Is the laptop connecting to the Internet using the wireless connection?

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
