CANNOT get on line...but "Connvectity"
Have lost the net/email. When try to go on line message is "Windows cannot find http" etc. Router is four place, two other machines on it working fine, The PC that will NOT go online is NOT put on line while others are running. PC was one of two in local network. XP HOME was "Repaired" by XP. I did this in hopes what was wrong would be fixed. NOW at XP Sp1 status as cannot connect to SP updates. There WAS a virus before, something kept firing up MS Installing Scan which went off anytime you tried to run anything, more so to connect to net. Did some virus searches and killed a few that turned up, now that has gone away but it seemed to have come in with "repair"

Now as before cannot get to net or email. All programs work fine, but gets VERY slow when I try shortcuts to net or tbird for mail.. Mention this a very odd as REALLY bogs down then and only then.
Attempt to go online, get message
"Firefox can't find server at en-us-start3.moziilla.com"
T bird no mail states "Failed to connect to server at our mail site. en.us.www.mozilla etc etc"
Network adapter
Shows local area connection 10mbs connectivity
Has "address hard wired in as will NOT find address under automatic,
ISP confirms nrs correct but is NO help on solutions.
Driver on card up to date and even switched ethernet card from working machine to prove HW was OK.
Ping results are
Address ping 192.168.2.100 Ping request could not find host 192 etc.
Preferred DNS Server 64 eetc time out. stats were sent =4 received =0
Pint computer (name) sen4 received 4 lots =0 AKA oddly
Stats are for 192.168.2.100 and TTL=128
Nslookup is "timed out" etc "cannot find server name for address
for both prime and secondary, "Default severs are not available"
Default server unknown"
Ipconfig is
Server Unknown 64.53 ete

ANY IDEAS here. This thing went down with what seemed to be a MS INSTALL SCAN virus but NEVER found it.. got rid of some malware, but got rid of MS install (AKA msiexec.exe) issue .
NO firewalls up ALL Antivirus removed. And for now stuck at SP home sp1 as cannot get on line.
ANY data from bad PC must be put on CD and then run on this machine, as this one is online., NOTE to test PC I simply unplug the DSL line from bad machine and plug it in on this VERY old (1998) WIN98 machine and ALL works fine.. SO has to be a SW issue. Not to good at the network. LAN etc, so need some help in this one. NOW seems something screwed up the net do it’s thing systems and not a clue where as HW seems fine, sooooooooo?????
NOTE
Does make the case for not tossing the old clunker out when you get a new one as this closet queen is working OK, a bit slow but does work.

Will NOT "frmat" drive as net hookup ONLY thing that does not work. VERY frustrated!

NOW have Pings, but NO www/email connections?
UPDATE. Now have Ping in address, computer name, and 127.0.0.1 but same message of
Windows cannot find http" (sites) when trying to get on the net.. not into this area, but seems like the PC is no telling the router or whatever where to go. Router is working fine, this PC using the DSL line from the PC that will not go on line. Note did a "XP Repair" and PC is now stuck at XP sp1 as cannot get on line to update it. Using firefox and tbird, even tried MS IE but it said same, cannot get sites.. IDEAS PLEASE???
See Orig post for other details.

Please show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

NOTE when task mgr, network running get about .2% useage when ping or going for google or such.. seems something going on Note. I pulled the DSL liner from bad PC and plugged into this one so it is OK.

First step, enable DHCP, that's probably one issue.

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.
  • Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Connection Status window.
  • Click the Properties button to open the Connection Properties window.
  • Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  • Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  • TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
  • Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  • Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  • Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
  • Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.

HAve done all this
PLEASE read orig post, have done all you suggest as I posted in details.

What you are doing is simply rerun of XP networking trouble shoot list, to save time and efforts we do not need to got there again, OK? Is suspect something is wrong in the XP SW that prevents PC from teling eathernet what to do and tell route5r where to look for server. So read the orig post and we can go from there and no point in rerun of XP trouble shoot list, did that days back.

Very strange problem but have noted XP and Vista seem to be having lots of "connectivity" but error message of "Windows cannot find http" etc.. THAt is the issue and what is causing it is the solution. Need some data on how to locate and fix this..

Please post again when and if you'd like help from us. We need data, not your rambling, to suggest any more potential fixes.

If you previously set the TCP/IP properties to dynamic, something happened in the meantime. The ipconfig /all you showed had some screwed up obviously incorrect static IP configuration.

I'll probably get dismissed pretty soon too. I don't comprehend anything from the initial post except that there is some kind of "Connvectity" problem.

Neither of you is ompetant
Granted should have read "connectivity, but the following on post is pretty basic stuff.... and neither one of you has a clue as to what the subject issue really is.. amusing stuff on your remarks on auto and static setttings which just porves my point.STRONG:LY suggest no one bothers with your "Advise" as you do not even know basics.. a MVP, that I doubt..or maybe a 7th grade MVP IT 101, but the following is easily understood by most with any real experience.. your two are simply trolls, frauds and degrade those with real skills... and youir posts more then prove it, and yes your MVP was siumply following the format in MS XP Network trouble shooting.. as if you did not understand the following.. well it speaks for self.. and again suggest none bother with your "advise"..your silly little posts suggest you should be banned form site.
FYI basic stuff here in post and you do not really have a clue what is said in following do you, perhaps after your complete IT 101, but your making fools of self, and in fact in an mildly amusing way!

Network adapter
Shows local area connection 10mbs connectivity
Has "address hard wired in as PC will NOT find address under automatic,
ISP confirms address nrs correct but is NO help on solutions.
Driver on card up to date, even switched ethernet card from working machine to prove HW was OK.
Ping results are
Address ping 192.168.2.100 Ping request now at 4 out, 4 back 128 ms
Preferred DNS Server 64 eetc time out. stats were sent =4 received =0
Pint computer (name) send 4 received 4 128 ms
Stats are for 192.168.2.100 and TTL=128
Nslookup is "timed out" etc "cannot find server name" for address
for both prime and secondary,
"Default severs are not available, Default server unknown"
Ipconfig is
Server Unknown 64.53 ete
Same if going for google (which offers ping)

Disrespect and rudeness such as yours to volunteers who have offered help and advice for FREE on your problem have no place on our website. Since you obviously feel there is nothing for you here, perhaps you would be better served somewhere else.
