Question Need help setting up a wireless router!!
We have three laptops and a netbook, two of which in use at any given time, sometimes three. the space is limited so setting up the wireless would be awesome. We have a NetGear CG814GCMR Wireless router, and all the PCs have wireless access. We do not have a modem though; the cable goes straight to the router. Is this necessary?

I log on to the router through the ip address of http://192.168.0.1, I've tried setting up the wireless from there but I have limited knowledge of what I am trying to do.

Help would be awesome, please and thank you

<3 JO

EDIT: The netbook is running WinXP and the laptops are running WinVista (not by choice)

Login to the router and navigate to the wireless section. Once in a while you find a router that defaults to the wireless being off, so check the wireless mode to make sure that it is not off. Change the SSID from the default (probably "Netgear") to something you like.

Make sure the desired computers can connect by wireless. Then enable encryption on the router, preferably WPA(2)-PSK and reconnect the wireless computers.

I assume that the cable going directly to your Netgear is your coax cable, since your unit is a combined cable modem and wireless router, and that you already have internet access through it.

The wireless on the router has been turned on already, and I have already set the SSID to something more personal. There are several security types as I'm sure you are aware. I just changed it to WPA2-PSK and set a new password. I will now try this, give me a moment.

EDIT: I tried this but I came across a new problem. Earlier I manually tried to connect by setting up nework settings on my computer. (making a name, security type and a password for it) Next to the network in which I am trying to connect, it say "the settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements for the network" and it has a red "X" on the far right side, where the signal bars should be.

also, in the properties for the network set on my computer, it has two security types for WPA2: WPA2-Personal, and WPA2-Enterprise.
Under Personal there are two more options: TKIP and AES.

You're making this far too complicated. Delete any profiles you created on the computer(s); scan for wireless networks. You should see yours, tell it to connect. It will ask for the passphrase--give it exactly what you gave the router.

Story of my life. Give me a sec

edit: I don't know how to delete the profile, and not it has disappeared along with the network im trying to connect to. It does that sometimes. :[

edit2: I deleted the profile from my computer, searched for wireless networks, and the one i am trying to connect to was there. I tried to connect, put in the password and such, but it said there was a problem. I tried to diagnose and it said there was no response from my router. I searched again for the network and it was gone.

Revert to no encryption again to make sure you can detect the network and connect that way.

If you mean disabling security, it still has the same problem. Try to connect, it says "No response from the router" when diagnosed.

On the router make sure the Dhcp server (probably in the LAN section) is enabled. I'm pretty sure it is since you are connecting wired.

More importantly make sure that you don't have MAC Address filtering (or control or access) enabled.

The Dhcp server was enabled when i found it, but I couldn't find where to enable/disable the MAC address filtering, control or access.

basically the only thing i could find about the mac address was DHCP Reservation Lease Info where i can enter a mac address and an ip address.

The MAC filtering would be a seperate page under Wireless Security settings. Maybe a list call Wireless Clients? If its on turn it off an retry wireless scan connect as before?

I couldn't find anything on Netgear's site about that model. Maybe it's only available on uranus, and I was only searching on Earth.

Boy this took some finding but the following manual is for a similar (not exactly the same!!) cable modem gateway from Netgear.

ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/Re...ual_CG814M.pdf

http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2314

The manual download page is very slow.

Chapter 3 Page 35 (3-1) takes you through Wireless Setup.

Pages 37 & 38 (3-3) covers restricting wireless access via MAC address which was my theory about why its not working for 3 out of 4 wireless devices. As per my earlier post either add the mac addresses or disable this!! NOTE: see middle of page 38 where the NOTE says Turn Access Control On even with a blank list of MAC addresses will prevent anyone connecting. So Turn Access Control Off in the Wireless Access List menu of the router.

I hope these instructions work as the model of hardware is not exactly the same. Netgear only show pictures of your 'white' box and some specs but not a setup manual.

The place where all this is is at a family restaurant near my home where I wo spend 99% of my free time there though so it's basically my home. For some reason I believe this router is special from the ISP, and netgear isn't affiliated with it. 'm not usually there on Sundays but when I get a chance I'll check it out again.
ty for the help!
