Question Solved: cannot connect to wireless network. please help.
My computer had 'multiple windows errors', according to a shop technician, so I installed a new version of windows and am now trying to access the internet again on my home wireless network.

I have now re-installed my Linksys Setup Wizard CD but cannot access the internet. The linksys monitor says, under Link Installation, that it "cannot associate with access point", but under Site Survey, it does recognise my home network, as well as my neighbours on either side of the house. When I click on connect in Site Survey and enter the correct WEP key and password, it takes me back to the Link Installation screen, informing me that it "cannot associate with access point".

If I "Use Windows XP wireless configuration", it also tells me that a few wireless networks are available but when I click on my home one and enter the correct WEP key, it does not connect

When I first clicked on "Use Windows..." earlier, for about 30 seconds it was connected to the internet as "Excellent", but this kept coming on and off every 3 seconds.

From looking at other forums, it appears this information may be of some use:

"Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
D:\Documents and Settings\Joe>IPCONFIG/ALL
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : john-gc8ipqsr22
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connecti
on
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-07-E9-ED-A9-90
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-12-17-91-18-90"

The biggest potential difference that I can see to others' is that my "Media State" under Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection is disconnected. Could this the problem?

I ran "Winsockfix" earlier but it made no changes.

PLEASE HELP! It is very much appreciated.

Disable ICS to start. Disabling Internet Connection Sharing

Delete ALL stored wireless network profiles first. Next, using a wired connection, configure the router with no encryption or MAC filtering. See if you can connect that way. Once you get that working, you can enable encryption again.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I disabled the Internet Connection Sharing. (by unticking the box next to "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection").

I have successfully logged onto the internet through a wired connection. However, the wireless network still just says that a network is available but when I put in the WEP key for my home network and click 'ok', the box just closes and nothing happens.

Perhaps it is because I do not have the correct drivers? I have been able to download the "Intel® Pro 100/1000 LAN drivers" from the techguys website but this does not include the wirlesss network drivers does it? Any idea where I can get this from?

Thanks for any help!

I think what John is wanting you to try is to hook up the ethernet connection, log into the router and disable the security, so that when you try to connect, it will no longer ask for a network key. Then see if you can connect wirelessly after doing that

Correct, you need to disable encryption to start and get logged in that way. I suspect you're simply using the wrong WEP key, happens all the time.

Okay, thanks to you both. I will try it asap.

When I click 'OK' and put the WEP key in though, it simply closes the box and nothing changes. Woudn't it at least tell me that I had the wrong WEP key?

(By the way, The WEP key is different to the WPA key, right?)

The wireless driver, and Linksys utility, should be the latest from Linksys's web site.

Yes, a WEP key or passcode is different from a WPA passphrase, but they can all be referred to as a "key."

Unless your XP is prior to SP2 use these repairs:

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2 or SP3.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.
