Well, if a different adapter didn't work, I'm about out of ideas...

I took the following to mean you had a good connection.

Quote:
I did install a new usb to wireless and a new driver, it is the one i am using at the moment.

As you can see i was able to ping yahoo, but i still couldn't get IE or firefox to connect via google.com or yahoo.com.
any suggestions now that i have a reasonable IP address; The ping of the .76 is a wired mac to router. the ping to .65 that didn't come back was to a computer in the other room via wireless thru the router.

your help is greatly appreciated.

This has all the earmarks of a stack corruption issue or a firewall configuration issue, since you can't ping Internet sites by name. Disable ALL firewalls and run that WINSOCK repair and try pinging yahoo by name.

What happens if you paste 69.147.76.15 into the IE address bar, do you go to Yahoo's page?

if I paste the ip address for yahoo in nothing cannot connect that way either. Page cannot be found.
Can you give me the way to make sure all firewalls are off, and where to find the winsock repair?

I appreciate the help.

given up
Thanks for your support.
I ran that winsock software days ago, but had no issues so it said.

I gave up and Reloaded the op sys (clean).
now guess what!... nothing. I can load the driver for the usb to wireless, connects (turns on the lights on the router). but... don't get the ip address required, get a bogus one, get 255.255.0.0 for subnet mask...

I cannot add a network connection, all it will let me add is a modem connection or a vpn, no direct connection thru the "add a connection" wizard, or from the control panel. I did see the tcp/ip properties when i opened the adapter software, but the connection doesn't show up in the list under network manager.

Dazed and confused.

Turn off all encryption and MAC filtering on the router and see if it'll connect.

How old is the wireless card and driver? What encryption are you using?

The usb card is a new Linksys WUSB54GSC v2...it connects breifly to my home page then drops the connection before I can connect to anything else. I'm associating to an ATT wireless (DLS) router...not of my own choice. My Vista maching does fine, XP home and Pro work fine also. Win2K does not. I would appreciate any help you can share.

The only thing that comes to mind is an encryption issue. Since you've turned it off, I'm kinda' lost.
