Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Note: You will need to post complete details of your configuration and your specific issue in this new thread for us to help you.

Thanks for your cooperation.

cannot get to the internet from my win2k box
Hi,
I have a win2k pro computer from Dell. I was connected to my 2wire wireless router with a usb to wireless adapter, the adapter still talks to the router, but I cannot reach the internet from Netscape or IE. Both programs say that the page cannot be loaded (www.google.com). The connection used to work, but I don't know anything that changed. I did try to reinstall win2k, but I get the same responses. In my Network connections, I have only one. It is the wireless adapter ( I installed a new one of those also, but same issue) and it says it is working, and the signal strength is "4 bars".

I have run out of ideas, please make some suggestions.

First some diagnostic data.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Why didn't you ping the DNS? Can you post the actual IPCONFIG /ALL results?

You might also try this Automated WINSOCK Fix all Windows Versions and see if that sorts it out.

new ip addresses
Hi,
last night i did run the exe you pointed me to, and it returned no errors.
I plugged in the wireless usb connector, made connection to the router, I ran ipconfig, and had no ip address. I re-connected to the router, opened firefox(couldnt find the page... no wonder) so I went to a second computer on the network, got its ip address and put a neighboring address on my win2k, could ping itself but not the router. I did an ipconfig /renew, it came back with an ipaddress no where near the correct address, the right few octals are 192.168, the 2k box came back with 192.254... and the sub net mask was 255.255.0.0.
Not the normal sub net.

should i just do a format, and try over? or do you have suggestions?
any are welcome!... thank you for listening.

The 2K box probably really came back with 169.254.x.x, I doubt it was 192.254.x.x, right?

Again, it helps if you post the actual results, makes for less guesswork on our part.

Sounds like you have one of the following.
  1. Mismatched encryption key or MAC filtering.
  2. Bad drivers for the USB wireless.
  3. Defective USB wireless adapter.

I'd start by disabling ALL encryption and MAC filtering on the router and see if you can connect that way.

Yes you are right about the ip i typed wrong, it was 192.554.

I did copy the text, but i had made some errors, wouldn't have done any good to give you that... then time got away. I think it is the encryption ... I bet, I have it set for 128bit cause my daughter uses a MacBook Pro on the system, and it insists on 128 bit. I did install a new usb to wireless and a new driver, it is the one i am using at the moment.

I will try to get you a better list of my ipconfig tonight.

thanks for your patience.

Well, if a different USB adapter works, then you're down to bad drivers or a defective adapter I would guess.

A different usb didn't work, i was just frustrated with the original 2wire that came with the router. So I tried to install a new / better USB to wireless adapter.
I still cannot figure out what 'stopped working' that the original adapter stopped connecting to the web, but sometimes it gave a 'good' ipaddress and sometimes not, but no matter which ip is given, the web cannot be reached.
