Trouble connecting to public wireless
Hi there. I have a decent grasp of most tech stuff, but am totally clueless when it comes to networks and connections.

I have recently (past two months or so) been unable to connect to wireless networks in public places on my Inspiron 1420. I have tried at my school, at the library and in coffee shops to no avail. Wireless is fine at home.

My computer can detect the networks and claims to connect to them, but I cannot access the internet via browsers, iTunes, messenger, etc. When I run "Repair" I am prompted to reset the network adapter. It then claims that the problem is resolved.

When I run connection diagnostics under the Dell WLAN Card Utility, I get "failed" for the Gateway IP Ping test. I don't know what that means.

ipconfig /all follows:

That looks like a good IP configuration. Usually a DNS server can be pinged; I cannot ping that one, but I don't think that's your problem.

If you're failing on pinging the Gateway IP you probably have a non-Windows firewall or security suite that is blocking networking. Perhaps it is corrupted, or perhaps it is set to only allow whatever your home network is.
