D-link DIR-615 suddenly stopped working
Hi everyone, I've been using a D-link DIR-615 router successfully to connect to the internet for about 7 weeks. Up until now, it was working perfectly, both wirelessly and wired. It's also using the latest firmware (4.00).

The internet status LED on the front of the router is orange instead of green. When accessing the admin panel, it shows a blank IP address so I believe it's having trouble getting an IP address from the modem.

I've tried rebooting it numerous times and still the internet light remains orange and it's not working. I've even tried restoring it to the factory settings but to no avail. The internet works fine if I connect to the modem directly so it's definately the router at fault.

Does anyone know why it would suddenly stop working after such a short time? I'm out of ideas.

Did you power cycle the modem first, then the router? You MUST cycle power whenever you change the attached device on the modem.

Yes I tried disconnecting everything and connecting it back. I switched on the router first, then the modem but still the problem persists.

Just found out something else. In the status page of the router config, it says 'DHCP Client Disconnected' and there is a button called 'DHCP Renew'. Just thought I'd cracked it when I clicked it but unfortunately it still isn't retrieving an IP address!

Sounds like the router may have died, it does happen, and new equipment will fail more often in the first few weeks.

The final test would be a factory reset of the router and reconfigure it. For a cable modem, you should get a wired connection by simply doing the factor reset.

Unfortunately I have tried the reset function twice on the router and the internet still doesn't work. I am on cable and get no connection, whether wireless or wired.

Looks like it might have died. Should I get in contact with D-Link for further support? Bought it from Amazon so it should still be under warranty.

A factory reset is holding the reset for 15 seconds with power on, did you do that? If so, I'd have to suspect the WAN port has died.

Yep done that twice. There's a small button near the power socket which I used a pen to get to. I held that for about 20 seconds and the power LED went orange. Soon after it came back on but the internet LED remains orange instead of green.

I guess it must be a faulty unit then, I'll have to get in contact with D-Link's support tomorrow and think about a replacement, I don't think I'll use this product again.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Too bad, I've had good luck with my DNS-615. It does happen to all brands, and many times hardware failures happen early in the device life.

Yeah I think all routers are prone to failure, doesn't matter though, I'm sending it back for a refund from Amazon.
