The sfc /scannow yielded no results.

Since my install is pretty fresh I did a system restore back to before I installed a few programs.

GOOD NEWS !!!

The nbtstat -n is working now. I could ping the other computer but not by it's name, that failed but pinging by IP address was fine.

Next I tried to restart all the services mentionned above as well as set them to automatic, quite a few weren't started and rebooted

The Netbios is still loaded, I can still ping by IP address but not name and now my shares are back in the Network Places window but the other computer is nowhere in sight.

ON the Vista laptop the XP desktop can now be seen when I do a full map, I can ping it by address but not by name AND nbtstat -n fails...even though it is enabled and the service is started.

Any ideas?

Phil

I don't have a clue why that is not functioning. Are the services running after the reboot?

Oh yes they are. XP desktop seems to be fine now.

For the Vista machine I tried to reboot after disabling all startup processes and programs to see if one of them was interfering with the Netbios service/driver, but again to no vail, Netbios will not load even though it is enabled in my connection's TCP settings and the service is started.

Ok so I tried that command and it did told me that some files were damaged. Now I am trying the follow the steps provided on the page you supplied and I get stuck.

As stated on that page at step 2 of 2 I have to enter this command:

findstr /C:"[SR] Cannot repair member file" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

Here's my version:

findstr /c:windows\logs\cbs\cbs.logs > sfcdetails.txt

Once I hit enter nothing happens, the cursor moves down one line and just blinks there...did I typed it correctly?

Thanks,

Phil

No, you did not type it correctly. You missed "[SR] Cannot repair member file" (plus the space at the end of that string.

The findstr is supposed to search ...\cbs.logs for lines containing that string and put them into sfcdetails.txt. The way you typed it the search string is windows\logs\cbs\cbs.logs and it is going to search standard input--which is why the cursor is blinking waiting for you to type.

Actually I went further. I restored to a previous day but that didn't do it so I simply reinstalled Vista.

Well the Netbios problem has been solved. All the computers can see and ping each other, but there is one thing.

From the Vista Laptop, if I click on my other computer which is name Phil here is what I get

Windows cannot access \\ Phil

Funny thing is that all the shares are good on both computers and I can even copy from the public Vista folder to an XP folder and vice versa. It is VERY slow though, transferring a 150meg file takes about 2 minutes

Any reason why i can't access XP from Vista and why is it so slow?

Thanks,

Phil

The prime suspect for lack of access is a non-Windows firewall or security suite.

150meg meaning 150 megabytes? If so that would be 1200 megabits in 120 seconds equals 10 Mbps.

That's perfect if one of the links in the path is 10 Mbps ethernet. About as expected or maybe a little slow if both PCs are using 'G' wireless. About 1/2 or a bit less of expected if one PC is using 'G' wireless and the other 100 Mbps ethernet.

Hi Terry,

I do not have any 3rd party security programs or firewalls nor do I have Windows firewall on both computers as well.

I am on a N card and routeur. My desktop speed is suppose to be at 130mbps and the wireless card in the laptop should go up to 54mbps.

So I guess something is wrong...

Thanks,

Phil
