Cannot network an XP desktop with a Vista laptop
Hi all,

I received my new laptop this week as well as a wireless router (Linksys 160n), I set it up with my existing XP desktop and all was well. Both computers could see each other and I mapped drive on one that could be accessed from the other.

Yesterday the motherboard on my desktop died on me so I bought a bvrand new one as well as a new cpu and memory. I installed all the hardware late last night and today I, of course, reinstalled XP.

Now the XP machine is fine but I can't seem to network the two computers again. Trouble is I really don't know who is the culprit;

- Computers can ping each other
- Both can go online through the routeur
- Both see the wireless printer and use it
- On the Vista laptop if I go to the Network Sharing window and click on Full Map, it sees the desktop.
- Of course both use WORKGROUP for the work group name
-I've tried several ways to share folders and drives on the vista laptop which yielded no results.
-The XP desktop has the fix for the LL something

I am beginning to be at a loss here, any pointers that could help me move forward with this issue?

Thanks,

Phil

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Places (Network and Sharing Center in Vista), make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login. NOTE: Vista's default is to require a password on the account to enable file/print sharing.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing. You can open a command prompt as described above and type the following command: nbtstat -n. This will display the status of NetBIOS or indicate it's not configured.

Thanks John,

Unfortunately I really don't have the time to fiddle around with this issue, too much work. I will give it a whirl tomorrow and report any progress (or a lack of any) back in this thread.

Thanks,

Phil

Ok so here's the results of all the troubleshooting you ask me to do

Firewalls turned off (I only have the Windows one)

Computer can ping each other by IP address -- OK
Computers can ping each other by name -- FAILED (both)

Services started and set to "automatic" -- DONE
(Many on the XP machine were off and set to manual, only one on the Vista machine was set to Manual but all were on)
Same workgroup -- DONE

Turn on Netbios over TCP -- Both were off but turned on now
Nbtstat -n -- Failed on both

On both computers "ipconfig /all" tells me that NetBios over TCP is turned off even thoug both are on.

Anybody else wants to throw in a suggestion?

Thanks,

Phil

We all the services actually started? It's not the fact they're set to automatic or manual, but they also have to be running.

Sorry I should've been more specific, yes all services are started.

The wireless zero configuration is bugging me though, it is set to "automatic" but everytime I reboot it doesn't start by itself.

It's dependencies are the RPC sevice (which is fine) and the NDIS user mode I/O Protocole.

I am sorry if the latter sound strange, my computer is in french so I am doing a literate translation just to be on the safe side.

In any case I cannot find that NDIS services in the Services window, is that a problem?

Thanks,

Phil

*** Edit ***

Now "My Network Places" doesn't even show it's local shares...?

NDIS isn't listed in the services window.

Let's see this from that computer.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

And don't worry about the output being in French; from all the numbers and the constant format we can understand most of it and ask about anything that we do not.

Do both computers have user account with passwords? Are the accounts created on the XP machine duplicated on the Vista machine (user name and password -- the account doesn't have to be logged into, but it does have to exist) and vice-versa? Note that the user accounts must have passwords -- blank passwords don't match.

Courtney; I am sure I am following you here, before I had to reinstall XP all I had was my admin (and sole) account, which I didn't have to log into. In other words I didn't have to choose an account everytime XP had rebooted, it would go straight from boot to desktop.

Are you telling me that I need to make a password for my admin account?

By the way, as of now in the full map of the network sharing window on the Vista machine the desktop is not visible anymore. I believe it was up until I started/set to automatic all the services mentioned by John. I am not accusing, just merely stating the fact

Thanks again

Phil

You need to enable this.

Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP for 2K/XP
  1. Right click Network Places (Network Neighborhood for W98).
  2. Select Properties
  3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
  4. Select Properties
  5. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
    • Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties
    • Click Advanced
    • Select the WINS Tab Above
    • Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
  6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.

It's already done John, I don't know why it doesn't "register" but it has been enabled for the last two days...

We don't have too much luck getting NetBT working again short of a Repair Install.

Try sfc /scannow.
