 | Member with 33 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Experience: Beginner | | Bridging connections results in limited connectivity I am trying to connect to the internet on an xbox 360 through my laptop (so as to save myself the 80 bucks for the wireless adapter). Doing so by connecting the 360 to my laptop with wireless internet. I had initially set it up with ICS, which worked, but is behind moderate NAT something meaning that performance is very poor online.
The other option that I've read about that had more success in this area is bridging the connection by selecting the wireless connection and the wired connection to the xbox and bridging them. However, whenever I attempt to do this the ips assigned are 169s, and the wireless immediately goes into limited connectivity mode.
What can I do so that this does not happen? Is there any way to bridge these connections? I know it has worked for other people, as there are many how tos online and on youtube.
Any help is greatly appreciated | | Moderator with 96,644 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: South Eastern PA, USA Experience: Advanced age & experience | | What version and patch level of Windows? What is the source of the wireless signal?
Remove the network bridge first.
Make sure the port that is going to feed the XBOX is configured for automatic addressing.
Configure the network bridge again. | | Member with 33 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Experience: Beginner | | I have up to date vista, And the source of the wireless is downstairs in my house, I have 2 bars up here, and it's normally fine (I'm using it right now to be online)
How do I make sure my own pc is configured for automatic addressing? | | Member with 33 posts. | | Join Date: Feb 2005 Experience: Beginner | | Comcast WCG200-CC is my wireless source, sorry to be vague before | | Moderator with 96,644 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: South Eastern PA, USA Experience: Advanced age & experience | | Connect the cable between the two units, and have them both booted.
Post this for each of the computers.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command: Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command. IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Enable DHCP on the wired connection that you're using to connect to the XBOX.
Let's also disable IPv6 Disable IPv6:
1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.
Reenable the bridge connection.
Post the IPCONFIG /ALL data again.

#10 | So I bridged connections, set the wired portion to DHCP, made sure ipv6 was unchecked, and the internet worked upon turning on the bridge, for about 5 minutes, then it went limited connectivity. While the internet was working I tested internet on the xbox and that did not work at all, couldn't obtain an IP address. Here is the log after the limited connectivity happened.
I had to delete the bridge and disable and reenable the wireless connection to gain internet again to post this.

#12 | Yes, I tried that, but as I said in my original post this does not work very well, and ICS doesn't support port forwarding (which is what I need to make this work well.)

#13 | You still appear to have a good connection. When in bridge mode and you lose connectivity, please do this.
Try these simple tests.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key: NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.
Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution. IPCONFIG /ALL
PING <computer_IP_address>
PING <default_gateway_address>
PING <dns_servers>
PING 74.125.45.100
PING yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here. <computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address) <default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. <dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
