#16 | Retracing steps Have disabled windows firewall and McAfee on both computers and then tried to create an ad hoc network. The DavidPreston one can see the network and connect but cannot share files or go on the network - file sharing is on and discovery also, made them private networks. Then disabled IPV6 and tried to see if sharing was possible - NO. Have posted results. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6001] Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. #20 | Well, the last post shows a computer that's still not getting any connection. The 169.254.x.x address is the autoconfig address that Windows assigns when it can't find a DHCP server. There is a connectivity issue with that machine.
Did you try to change from a wired to a wireless connection on that machine?

#21 | Wired to Wireless? No changes. My connection to the other laptop was through the ad hoc wireless network. The connection to the internet was through an ethernet connection to the broadband modem. When I create a new network on one of the laptops, the other recognises it is there, but I cannot share files or the internet connection. I mainly use to create the network on JanetPreston-Laptop and an option would open up for me to click on internet sharing. This does not now come up as an option during the network creation. I would then connect the DavidPreston-PC (another laptop) to the network. Nothing has changed since the original working connection and the now failed connections.

#22 | Ghosts?
I'm running out of ideas, it's hard to diagnose a moving target!
What is the make and model of the modem and the router you are using? Can you connect each of these machine directly to the modem (power cycle the modem for 30 seconds for each connection change), and post the IPCONFIG /ALL from each of them? We need to start figuring out what is working and what is not working.

#24 | OK, each of them appear to connect, and that "modem" is a modem/router. A dumb question, why not just use a wireless router or WAP to do this and forget about trying to connect through the other machine? | | Junior Member with 16 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2009 Experience: Intermediate |

#25 | Using a wireless router Hi again,
My computer has a mind of its own and decided your last answer was spam, so I have been wondering for the last two days if you had given up! Anyway I checked spam and found your thread.
Why not use a wireless router? Of course I could. I have a couple at home in Northern Ireland I can bring out with me, but don't go home until 23rd Dec. Could I buy one out here - probably, but I do not know the quality of stuff here in India once I move out of the well known US/UK names. Going to the local town is 25 kms away and then you have to find the appropriate shop and surmount the language barriers so it amounts to a biggere deal than just ordering online.
WAP - If you mean use a WAP phone, I think the expense would probably not be worth it and it would be slow. You probably don't but if you mean write the protocol, that's way beyond my league.
I suppose I hate something to beat me. And when something was working easily two weeks ago, why would it suddenly stop. That is what made me think a windows update had done it rather than firewalls which had not been an issue before. But I cannot go far enough back on system restore so it is not an option.
Have we reached the end of the road? Given your expertise is there anybody else out there likely to know any other approach or is that too awkward a question to answer - like yes there are others means an insult to you, no there aren't means you can be accused of big headedness!
Thanks for all the effort to date

#27 | Finally got there! Thanks for the reference to the article. I know this address. I read the article and used it to check how to do things before joining tech support. However the good news is that I am back online. I am writing this via the wireless connection. The other laptop has the physical connection to the internet.
The only thing I have done is turn the wireless connection on and off several times using ALT+F2 even though previously I could see the network but could not connect.
No further questions. Thanks for all the suggestions and time spent
