Question Constantly have to reboot to get back lost internet connection. Any Help out there?
Hi All ... HELP please before I pull out all my hair~~~

I'm running Vista ... if you need more than that, let me know...

The problem is, that I have no problem getting an internet connection, but every day...
after I've been on the computer for, could be fifteen, twenty, thirty or more minutes...
I will suddenly lose my internet connection. Funny thing is, that I can still send and
receive email, so I know that I have a connection. I just cannot connect via my browser.

Now while it's working, it works great. I can search,download, etc... no probs. But
at the point when it decides "ENOUGH"... then it just stops working.

HELP please.... This is a real pain to have to reboot every time!!!

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.




Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.


  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • For wireless laptops, have you made SURE the wireless switch is on?
  • For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?




On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL


Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi...and thanks John Will for your response

First, before I answer your requests.. I want to add a couple of things that may or may not help...
1-.. on and off I have anywhere from 1-3 other computers on my home network. This one is the only one that has this issue.
2- i looked into the system logs at the time that this error occurs and this is what i get:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Proc 4800+ 2.50GHz
2G RAM
My ISP is Time Warner Road Runner
Cable Modem = Scientific Atlanta 2203C
My Router = Linksys 2.4 Wireless G
This computer is wired. Other computers when in use are wireless.
One additional computer running WinXP Pro was wired, now wireless
but no wireless computer have been running for the past two days. Same
error whether other computers are running or not.
This computer running Vista Home Premium and using Internet Explorer 8
(had same issue when running IE7)

No I haven't tried connecting directly to the cable modem to see if the problem reoccurs. I will try that tonite and check back tomorrow.

See if this helps about Event ID 10016.

The fact that you still have Internet connectivity seems to suggest a firewall or Internet security application of some kind is blocking your browser. Have you disabled ALL firewalls to see if that changes things? How about malware/spyware scans?
