So my internet is just fine with the current 2 computers on the network. But when I plug in my friend's computer the entire network slows down to a crawl. Downloading things at 8kb or so. But the moment I remove the ethernet the problem is solved. What's the deal?

Impossible to say, but I'd start with a spyware/malware scan of that computer. If he has something like P2P running, that could be sucking up lots of bandwidth when he connects.

This is was after we formatted his computer and then brought it over with a new installation of Windows 7. Though I did the same with mine just before he came over and everything works fine for me. There is nothing virus infected or any messed up settings that would be different from mine. And like I said, mine works fine.

In that case, I'd suspect either bad drivers for the network card or perhaps a defective network card. Something must be streaming from that computer to cause the slowdowns.

Perhaps something like WireShark would give you a clue to what the network traffic is from the computer?

broadcast storm at it's finest. you got a bad network card. post wireshark results.

Well all his drivers were updated to the latest version and he left so that's not a possibility. But it works fine at his house. But next time if the problem comes up I'll post the log
