connected to router, but not pulling up internet.
Hi,

So, my taskbar in the lower right hand of my screen tells me I'm connected to my router, but the internet isn't pulling up.

I ping the router, and it comes back timed out. I tried disconnecting, retyping the password, and reconnecting. I also tried setting up a static IP address, but to no avail.

My laptop connects fine, which is how I'm posting this, and also how I got some of the info to set up a static IP. The computer I'm having problems with is connected using a Netgear Wg111v2 dongle. The problems started after I tried to install, then uninstall Comodo Internet Security. I'm almost positive that this program doesn't have any malware or spyware bundled in.

A little help would be nice, thanks

Can you plug your computer back in and then do the following.

start > run > type "cmd" > type "ipconfig" > what is your current ip address.

Currently its set to 192.168.1.4, as a static IP. Should I set it to dynamic and let you know?

EDIT: My Laptop is set at 192.168.1.2

EDIT 2: Actually, I just tried to access the router on my laptop to remove security, because I hadn't tried that. When I pulled up the router page, it told me that 192.168.1.4 is managing it.

Thats what ipconfig tells me. It looks like I'm connected to the router, but every time I ping it, request times out.

Also, a couple of days ago, when this all started, I had a problem when viewing all available wireless networks, and I was getting a wireless zero error. I cant remember exactly what the error was, but it led me to this site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871122, and I followed the steps there.

Sorry for not mentioning it earlier. I forgot that I even had the error.

Edit: I just reset my router, and the connection went offline with the router, so its connected to the router, something is just blocking my connections.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
