Solved: Local Only no internet Hi all!
I used to have internet access on my Vista laptop. Then I set up an Ubuntu linux desktop and decided to set up a home network. The home network got set up ok, I can now access the files on my linux machine from my laptop, however, the vista laptop can no longer connect to the internet (the linux machine can). The connection seems to be "local only" from the Vista machine. When I try to repair it I get "There may be a problem with your domain name server (dns) configuration" error.
The only place I can go w/ my browser is to the router config page (192.168.1.1)
ipconfig /all gives:

The router settings when I go to 192.168.1.1 are:
Router name: WRT54G
Host name: [blank]
Domain name: [blank]
MTU: auto
Size: [blank]
Local IP address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP server: enabled
Starting IP address: 192.168.1.100
max num. of DHCP users: 50
client lease time: 0
Static DNS1: 192.168.1.101
Static DNS2: 192.168.1.100
Static DNS3: 192.168.1.103
WINS: 0.0.0.0
Time zone: central
When I was messing w/ it I temporarily set the router to Static IP, but have since then re-set it to "Automatic configration DHCP"
The static dns stuff is what I typed in, but I don't remember what the defaults were, so I'm not sure how to change it back
I also changed the timezone, but I don't think that should have messed that up.
As far as Windows settings, I enabled Network Discovery, but can't seem to turn it back off.
Can you guys tell me what I need to change to get internet access back on my Vista machine (hopefully w/o disabling the now working home network)?
I've been googling stuff and messing w/ the settings for hours now. I'm afraid to change any more by myself least I loose Internet access on the Ubuntu machine too. |
