Setting Up an Outdoor Network
Im looking into setting up a wireless network in an outdoors area. As such I was wondering if anyone knew what specs on the routers/attenas I should keep an eye out for.

Define the size and shape of the outdoor area, that's pretty key in determining what you need. How many simultaneous connections do you anticipate?

Size and Shape: The coverage will need to cover the down town area of Chattanooga, TN. I expect the number of connections to be quite high. I apologize if these answers are vague. The concept is still in development. As such any information would be greatly appreciated.

The current plan is to cover the whole Chattanooga, TN down town area with wireless coverage.

You need to hire professional help! The answers you get for something that complex in an on-line forum will be next to useless. This is not a project that you take on without a lot of up front planning.

It is a rather large task however, knowing what specs to look for in a router is a starting point. As such any help is greatly appreciated.

Specing out a router is definitely not the starting point of rolling out wireless networking to entire city. Frankly, your post doesn't pass the smell test. A professional project manager tasked with the enormous responsibility of rolling out wireless network access for a major US city would not be posting with router questions on a tech support forum.

...And with an experience level of "Computer Illiterate".

Seriously.

I apologize if my post smells fishy to you. However, to be clearer I am not a project manager. The assignment was to come up with a creative and innovative idea dealing with fiber optics. I came up with, attempting to provide wireless coverage to the downtown Chattanooga area which coincides with EPB laying fiber optics through out Chattanooga. It is part of a project I am working on as part of my Business Entrepreneurship class for UTC.

I posted on this forum in hopes of getting some guidance on which routers to look into. This being a tech forum I figured I could get some opinions on the specs of routers that are most important when trying to provide wireless coverage.

Thank for informing me that my starting point in error. I honestly believed this was the place to start. As it would give me an idea of the budget needed to accomplish the task by giving me an idea of how many routers/antenna I would need.

I don't think you're reading any of the posts we're making here! There is no way we can tell you what equipment you need or how much of it without a site survey and a detailed statement of system requirements at the least!

There simply isn't any way that someone from a couple of paragraphs in a forum post is going to give you any idea of the scope, cost, or really anything else of value for a project of this size.

I'm sorry that's not what you want to hear, but you really are starting at the wrong end of the horse!

If you're looking to become an entrepreneur, then it's really important for you to understand project management, scope, budget, business plans, etc. Jumping into a major project by starting with the "fun stuff" of hardware shopping is not how you run a business.

If your class isn't teaching you these basics, you need to find another program.
