Solved: One computer not seeing the other
I have just bought a Toshiba NB200 net book. I am trying to network with my original computer an emachine 210. They are both running Windows XP.

The netbook is using wireless connection & is able to browse the internet. I am also able to use my TVersity media server to successfully stream video from my emachines computer. But I am unable to see the emachines computer on the netbook computer.

From the emachine I can see & copy/move files from the netbook. (This computer is wired into the broadband modem.)

What I have done & tried so far.

Both computer are on the same work group & have different names.

I have pinged from both computers to the other using the computer name & this works. So I don't think it is a firewall problem.

Has anyone had a similar problem & if so how did they sort it out?

Thanks for any help given.

Have you shared the appropriate resources on the e-Machine? Unless there are resources shared, the system effectively becomes invisible on the network

Let's see this for each machine.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Can you connect to the Base computer from the Netbook computer if you do this?

Start, Run, \\Base

See what that does.

When I type \\base in run from the netbook I get a window open that has as it's title "This is the computer I intend to wirless network to (base). And hey presto the drive I have shared on it shows up & is accessible. I havent tried copying anything from or to it yet.

I have rechecked my network places & this drive is still not showing up.

See if you can fully share the drive, which I suspect the answer will be yes.

Next...

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
  • WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

I can confirm that all the services mentioned with the exception of Computer Browser on the emachines 210 are all started & set to automatic. I have now started computer browser on the emachine 210 but this has made no differance.

As you say I have been able to map all the drives/folders that I needed to and am able to copy & move files from them. But I am still unabale to see my "Base" computer on "My Network Places"

By the way thanks for all the help so far. It's just a bit frustrating that I am not able to use the simple method of browsing for the files I want!!

PS you mentioned the event log were do I find that?

Computer browser should be started, and it's the service that would allow you to browse, which is the function that is not working. Are you SURE it's running after you tried to start it?

Since we last communicated I have re-started both computers. I have checked on both & they are both running Computer Browser, (Started & Automatic).

When I re-started the Netbook I had to run \\base before I could browse to my mapped drives. Prior to this it would not allow me to get onto the mapped drives.

On the eMachine you only see the remote computer and not the eMachine? That machine obviously has a problem.

Have you any idea what the problem might be.

A few things that might help you decide.

The emachines computer use to be my only computer in the house until I bought the Netbook . It has an internal 250gb drive and an external 1TB drive attached to it.

When I got the netbook I decided to use the emachine as a server. I was having problems with it, which is one of the reasons I decided to get the netbook, so, after copying all the important stuff to the internal drive I used the rescue disk & reinstalled all the operating system & drivers. This made the computer quicker & seemed to cure the problems I was having.

The wireless broadband modem is connected to it by Ethernet cable. I run Tversity media server on it so that my son can watch any of the moves I have on my 1TB drive using his PS3, by the way this works very well.

The netbook connects to the internet & the sheared resources on the emachines via wireless

Any ideas what on the emachines could be causing the problem?

I don't see the closing quote and so don't know how long that title is. I assume that it is the Computer Description of the machine named Base. If I'm right, shorten the description to a dozen characters or so, reboot Base, and see if that makes any difference.
