Virgin Wireless Setup
I had virgin broadband installed yesterday and connected the modem to my laptop directly to try it out. But today when I try to set the wireless up with the disk that came with the router, I get to the stage where I have to name the network and enter a password but when I click next it cannot find the router. I have reset every thing but still it is not working. What can I do to resolve this problem? Thanks.

can we have some make and models

your PC is connected by a cable to the router LAN connection
You dont need the CD
we should be able to access and setup the router via your PC , but need to know the make and model of the router to find out the Login Username & Password and also the IP address to access the router configuration pages

The laptop is connected to the modem directly with the ethernet cable at the moment due to the problems with the wireless. The router was provided by Virgin its Netgear WGR614-9VGUKS.

I have a V9 manual on my PC do you have a manual?
if not a pdf version here
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1900

so you should be able to connect JUST to the router - so it it has is your cable between PC and Router and the mains cable

then

Quote:
http://www.routerlogin.net
http://www.routerlogin.com
If these URLs do not work, you must type the IP address of the router, for
example, http://www.192.168.1.1.

Enter admin for the router user name and your password for the password
Then you should be able to see the login page - and be able to setup some of the settings needed

I suspect very little requires changing to connect to virgin
But lets at least get to that stage

Do you have another PC that can be used on the modem to post back at all ?

I just read the manual online and it doesn't seem to help, I plugged the modem into the router but my laptop doesn't recognise the router at all. The disk that came with the router is virgin wireless manager and that doesn't help either. The only thing that I've done differently from the setup instructions is connect the laptop and the modem via ethernet cable before setting wireless up.

In the BOX - you may have had two cables - one for the Modem and one for the router
sometimes coloured differently Blue/Yellow I think

That manual I linked to does not show the connections
try here
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2177
its a version 7 manual

but on page
2-7
it shows the back of the router
You are connecting from one of the LANS (NOT Internet) to the PC
correct
Just PC - cable - Router - nothing else connected to the router for now ?
then try and loginto the router as above - what happens

When I enter the URL a box pops up asking for username and password, I put admin for the username and a password but the box just disappears for a second then pops back up, nothing else happens.

How where you connected to the router - cable or wireless when you did this ?

you may need to reset the router - button on the back - hold for 10sec

No, it didn't let me get passed that stage on the cd. When I ran the Virgin wireless setup disk I was trying to connect to the router wirelessly.

you should always do any setup on the router with a cable - because if the router reboots as often happens you lose connection - also interferance can cause a problem

so can you connect with the correct cable to the correct port LAN and see if you can login

OK - lets start to work on that.

Is the wireless light on?
download http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php and install

Can you post an ipconfig /all with the cable connected - lets see those results

-> firewall blocking - you may need to turn off firewall
-> wireless Encryption - Remove any wireless encryption from the router, and try to connect - post back results
-> The wireless is not switch on - most laptops have a physical switch or uses FN + f key to toggle on/off

{ipconfig /all}
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all

-> Start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all
post back the results here

TWO Methods to do that - if you cannot access the internet with PC, then use method 2 to copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Method ONE -------------------------------------------------------------
start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Method TWO -------------------------------------------------------------

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Device Manager}
Post back the results in device manager
Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} > network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
