Can't sustain a connection to the web via Ethernet
Back around '05 or so, my computer started doing this: Ethernet connection to the router/modem couldn't be kept for very long. I could stay connected for up to a few hours but then I'd get the little yellow "!" sign next to my connection on the tray. Sometimes I could only stay connected for a few minutes. I would right click it and repair it, and it was fixed for a little bit.
I switched to a wireless adapter and it worked great, but I wasn't able to host game servers because I just couldn't forward my ports with it (Don't know why) so I set out to fix my Ethernet troubles. I did a system restore and that fixed it for a few days, but then it went back to dropping out. I reformatted my computer, again, fixed for a few days then the trouble started back up.
Then, a couple of months later, I had absolutely no problems, and it stayed this way up until late last year when it started cutting out again.
I've tried connecting straight to the modem, through a router, used different cables, and updated my Ethernet drivers, no difference.
The only way I can get my connection back right now is to uninstall the drivers via Device Manager, then scan for hardware changes and let them reinstall, but it's still only for a couple hours or so before it cuts off again.

Help would be much appreciated, as I am keen to put a dedicated game server up.

Edit: Also, I am running Vista Home Premium, if that matters.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

  • If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
  • For wireless laptops, have you made SURE the wireless switch is on?
  • For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?
  • Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
  • If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

My ISP is Roadrunner.

I connect directly to an SMC broadband modem, which also has a built-in router, the model # is: SMC8014W-G

I am on Windows Vista Home Premium.

I use Firefox and Google Chrome.

The problem is I get kicked off of the internet roughly every 2 or so hours (A yellow "!" appears next to my connection on the icon tray) and sometimes I can't even stay on that long, when I am connected through Ethernet. Wireless connection works fine.

It still cuts off in safe mode.

My mother's computer connects wirelessly from another room, but when it used to be connected with Ethernet it worked fine.
