 | Senior Member with 246 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Solved: please help me with a network issue Hi, I am having problems with my home network.
I have DSL, a 2wire gateway.
This is how things were before I had problems.
Inspiron desktop with Vista 64 bit.
Dimension with Windows 2k
Studio laptop with Vista 32 bit conneted wirelessly.
Everything was fine and fast until 2 days ago. Now all three computers are very slow online.
Right before the problem began I upgraded the Inspiron to WIndows 7 64 bit. I had no problems at all and was able to get online right away. I went to Dell's site and installed the drivers released last month for Windows 7 for the realtec ethernet card and the chipset. I went to Nvidias site and installed the latest driver for the GE Force 9500GT.
Ever since then the Inspiron keeps losing the connection. The only way to make it work again is to go into device manager and uninstall the driver, reboot and reinstall the driver and then I can get online. Once I am online it is very very slow and flakey.
If the problem is the Windows 7 upgrade on the Inspiron why would the other computers be so slow also? All of them are slow in games, IE and Chrome. Emails are taking a long time to download as well.
I have checked for Windows updates, uninstalled Avira since I wasn't sure if it was Windows 7 compatible, checked for spyware and found none. I have power cycled the 2Wire several times. I replaced the ethernet cord between it and the inspiron since one end of it looks frayed.
I don't know what else to check or to try, any ideas?
Thanks!!!

Pick a computer you haven't tinkered with, and using a wired connection, boot it in Safe Mode with Networking.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.
The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:
If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.
Copy/paste that link here. Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run. DSLReports
Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Surely, at least one of these computers is wired, right? | | Senior Member with 246 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Yes, the Inspiron and the Dimension are wired. I generally use the Studio wireless but I wired it up and im in safemode waiting my turn for the tests.
Thanks so much for your help! #11 | I think you have your answer.
You have massive packet loss, doubtless why it's so slow. Time to beat harder on the ISP, this is their issue. | | Senior Member with 246 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Experience: Intermediate |

#12 | Wow, really? I am so relieved to hear that, actually as I am switching next week U-Verse FIOS just became available in my area so I though I would give it a try.
I suppose I will call them today though, another week of this and I may go crazy. I couldn't think of anything I changed except upgrading one computer to Windows 7and I really like it! i didn't want to have to go back to Vista.
Thanks again for your help, your a lifesaver.

#13 | I have Verizon FiOS, and I know it's been great here. I've had it for over two years, and the only outage has been when a tree took out the power and the fiber lines up the street. Can't really fault them for that. | | Senior Member with 246 posts. | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Experience: Intermediate |

#14 | That's good to know! Now I am hoping it helps with this issue, but to begin with I was just hoping for better TV. I had to fire the cable company about a year ago and haven't been happy with the satelite.
Now that I know how to find so many cool tools for testing the connection I am going to run the line test and speed test the day before and right after I get the U-Verse. Just to see

#15 | Well, it's hard to imagine a fiber connection being worse than what I see for your existing connection. | |
