Trouble printing to Mac-Mini network printer from XP Laptop
I have two printers connected to my Mac Mini. On my XP laptop, I've mapped to both printers exactly the same way: \\mac-mini-computer-name.log\printer name. I can print to one of these printers just fine (Canon ip4000), but I can't print to the other one (Canon MP190).

I know that the XP can "see" both printers, because when I'm mapping to them, the printer name automatically pre-fills after i type in the computer name\. File and printer sharing is enabled on both machines, as well as the exceptions tab in Firewall Settings.

I don't understand why I can print to one printer and not the other, when they're both set up/mapped using the exact same method.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The only odd thing I've noticed (and this might be the problem) is when I right-click on the MP190 printer on my XP laptop, and choose 'Sharing,' the box for 'Share this Printer' is checked. I don't think this should be checked since the printer is not physically connected to my laptop. However, I can't de-select this and choose 'Do Not Share this Printer,' because this is option is greyed out.
(When I right-click on the IP4000, 'Do Not Share this Printer' is selected.)

Not sure if this will help, but try using Bonjour by Apple. Download to the XP computer and install. This program simplifies the Windows/Apple interface. I have been able to successfully get this to print from Windows XP, Vista and 7 to my IMac that has a Canon ip4200 attached.
Good Luck;

Thanks for that tip. I'll consider that, but I wouldn't think I'd have to install Bonjour, considering that one printer is already set up successfully.

Maybe the issue is the printer driver. Even though I have put the Canon ip4200 driver on the computers I use, Bonjour finds other drivers that seem to work just fine, which is one of the reasons I recommend it. For instance, I have an HP driver toggled to work the Canon printer. Go figure, but it works.

I d'loaded bonjour and it immediately detected both computers. the drivers were on the list and i chose them and completed installation.

now i can't print from either printer over the network. i also tried different brand drivers as you mentioned above, but still no luck.

i'm about to give up. extremely frustrated.

Sounds like the sharing did not work correctly.

How are they connected?

i've since removed them from the xp laptop, then re-added them via bonjour. they are connected directly to my mac-mini, via usb.

I figured out what it was last night. If you tried to print from the xp laptop while the mac was in sleep mode, the print would not go through, and kept any future print jobs from the xp from printing, even while the mac was awake. You couldn't even see the print jobs in the queue on either machine, so it was like they were just 'out there' jamming things up. There was no way to cancel them.

So I ended up having to delete the printers from the mac and the xp, & reinstall them. I did some more testing, and as long as the mac is awake when a print is sent from the xp, it will go through.

In messing around with the network & share settings on the mac, I found the option 'Wake for network access,' in order for the xp to wake up the mac to access shared files/printers, but this can only be done if you have an 802.11n router. Mine is only 802.11g.

To avoid buying another router, I scheduled the mac to only go into sleep mode from midnight to 10am each day.

Yup. I have noticed that as well. A minor annoyance, but wholly surmountable. I am glad you can print now. Excellent.
