Solved: bizarre router problem?
i have dsl-lite from att. i've used their westell router for years with no problems. i want to connect a laptop to the same dsl line so bought a linksys router wrt54g2 and repeatedly followed the wiring directions. i guess i did something right because i am composing this using the wireless connection on my laptop. despite the linksys being five feet away, i am looking at two red bars on my wireless bars.)

here is the problem: my laptop works using wireless, but my desktop will not work with a wired connection. same with the laptop. if i run an ethernet wire between the linksys and the laptop, i cannot connect to the internet. my desktop cannot connect to the internet because it does not have a wireless card. it can connect using the att modem but not when the cable runs from the linksys.

the instruction disk with the wireless router has repeatedly told me that it needs the id and password of the new router (two options for setting up: using only the linksys or using both. since my dsl line runs into the att modem and there is no telephone jack on the linksys, i figure i must use both.) i got the id and password but then the instruction never asked me again.

i just decided to try my laptop and discovered that at least the wireless is going well. any ideas on how to get the desktop working?

thanks

You may be having IP conflicts being caused by having
dhcp enabled on both routers.
DHCP assigns IP addresses to all the devices on the network.
Make sure you disable dhcp on one of the routers.
You only want one assigning IP's.

Well you should check the IP configuration too, see what it says:

on both machines:

go to Start > Run > type cmd and press enter. When command prompt shows type in ipconfig /all and press enter. Copy and paste the info here. For your other desktop, just type in the following:

IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS servers, is DHCP shows Enabled etc

Let's see this from the working laptop and one of the non-working desktops.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

That's because you didn't follow the instructions exactly. You seem to have skipped part of this line.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

*** EDIT *** just saw your second post when I was typing. It definitley looks like a conflict as your default gateway is different than your wireless information. So one is pulling information from one router and the others are pulling from the other. So disabling the DHCP from one of the routers should take care of that. (from what i see it looks like the modem is also a router)

One alternative is to do the information below, or to change the setup of your modem/router

with this information, you could try a static IP address on the wired connections to make sure you have connectivity.

In Start > Control Panel > Network Connections, right click on the Local Area Connection can click properties. Under 'This connection uses the following items:' click on the Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] and click Properties. When the properties show, click on the 'Use following IP address:' radio button and add the following information:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.150
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

For the DNS, select 'use the following DNS servers' and add this:

Primary DNS Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.87.74.166
Alternate DNS Server . . . . . . . . . . :68.87.68.166

Then click Apply > OK, and exit the screens. There should be an icon to say "connected: 100Mbps" in the bottom right. That would mean you have a connection to the router and then you shuld have internet access.

If you do get it, do the same for the second one, but the IP address needs to be different. The last number (150) needs to be something else, and I would suggest 151, so the IP adress would be 192.168.1.151. The rest of the information will be the same.

i did the laptop, double-clicked on the four bars in the lower right and saw that the speed is 11.0 Mbps, gateway ip address: 192.168.1.1 and client ip address: 192.168.1.101. does this sound ok? if so, i will go to the desktop and do the same.

when i double-clicked on the four bars, i could see a number of wireless signals a few much stronger than mine and my router is about three feet from the laptop. how can i get the green bars? when i do the desktop, will that magically occur?

thanks so far for all your help on this.

your desktop will have a different icon since you are not going wireless.

Double check your speed on that laptop... it should be 54Mbps. Sometimes it does go lower.

i changed the desktop as instructed. made sure all the wires were connected correctly. followed the linksys setup disk instructions. got the screen asking for the id and password of my old router, entered them, told they were incorrect but i made sure they were correct with bellsouth last night and i checked them again on my laptop and they work.

clicked to set up the linksys without entering the id and pass of the bs modem, and eventually told "liksys setup wizard requires new router to be configured with the default username and password." "could not access new router." "restore the factory defaults for your router."

i cannot get the internet on the desktop but do have wifi on my laptop.

i opened the wireless network connection on my laptop. this is what it says:

address type: assigned by dhcp

ip address: 192.168.1.101 (different from what i typed as instructed by you)

sub and default: same as you instructed.

on the desktop, opened the local area connection:

address type: manually configured

ip, sub and default match numbers you told me to input.

does this offer any clues? the speed on the desktop local area connection shows 100 mbps.

in your instructions, you mentioned the "wired connections." should i have changed the laptop since it is not wired to either router? the local area connection on the laptop has a red X over it and that is where i input your numbers. should i do it on the wireless connection?

NOTE: i now have all green lines and it tells me 54mbps so something is going well!
