well, most ISP say - UPTO
you could run some speed tests from here
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
and also a line quality test - post the result

wow - that is poor
whats the make and model of the router
They often have a status page showing download speed

I would also talk to TALK TALK and see what they have to say and get them to run a test

What do you mean "the line quality never worked"?

Let's try this PingTest, please post the forum link to the results here.

my modem is a "D-Link dsl-2640r broadband wirless g adsl2+ router"
apartently talktalk has been rung and apaently all they have said is that the line does not support any higher speeds, which is bull! we've had 10times higher speeds before.

as for the line quality: i resitered an account( the only way they let you test) and started the scan but i t never did anything i wait for 5 hours.. no joke..

the ping test had a line quality rating and it said i hate a B*. the ping was 46ms and the jitter was 3ms, the packet loss could not be tested for some reason, it just said "unable to test".

i'll call talktalk and talk to them myself, but what do i tell them is wrong?

thank you very much for the help so far you guys rule

When you switched providers, did you change or unplug any phones, modems or phone related products. A phone/device plugged into the same line without going through an ADSL filter will cause the problems that you are encountering, even if the phone is on the hook.

I use the talktalk 2Mb service, and generally get the stated maximum speed despite being at the far end of the local phone network, with less than great line noise.

i checked all the lines and there was one phone that was not going through a filter all the other lines were filtered, i plugged in the filter, an did another speed test... it says that i had a bit higher speed than before, but its hard to tell because there is a large difference between each test..

Just as a test, try unplugging everything from the phone line apart from the modem and see if this has any effect. If it does, then plug the devices back in one at a time to find the culprit.

You need to enable PING (ICMP) responses for your router for the ping tests to work.

i did a line quality test that i found on this website:http://demo.ookla.com/linequality/
latency:206
jitter:12
packet loss: 0%
download speed:0.82mbps
upload speed:0.42mbps

is there anything else i could do?

I have no idea where that server is located, which is why I recommend one where you pick a close server. We're trying to test the local loop characteristics, not see if we can get halfway around the world.

Here's the result from PingTest to a local server.

Here's the result of SpeedTest to a local server.

Finally, here's the result of the test you selected, but I have no idea where the server is located. FYI, my upload speed is WAY faster than reflected here.

You just need fiber to your house and you can have even faster speeds, I'm just not willing to pay for more speed.

Your speeds do really suck, did you have any packet loss in any of the tests?
