Can't access shared folder
Hi all,

I have a server running on Windows Server 2008. It's connected to network and has a shared folder. The shared folder is important and accessed frequently.
When I try to access the shared folder by typing \\<server IP Address>\ from Windows + Run, I've got an error message said that "The specified network is no longer available".
I remote the server, check the services with services.msc and find that Computer Browser service doesn't start while it usually starts automatically. When I try to start it, I've got an error message "Error 230 : The pipe state is invalid".
I've searched from Google but don't find any information useful.

The only way to gain access to the shared folder I've found is to remote the server and it's succeeded.

My questions are :
1. Does Computer Browser service is responsible about no access to the shared folder from the server?
2. How to start the Computer Browser service? If it is possible, I don't want to restart the server.

Regards,
Durz

Computer browser must be running, that part is true. Are you saying that your computer browser service is stopped?

Thanks for your response John.
Here's the story :
My friend told me yesterday that he can't access the shared folder.
I remoted the server and found that Computer Browser service is stopped.
When I tried to start it, I've got an error message "Error 230 : The pipe state is invalid". The server is slow too and has delayed time when I tried to run services.msc. It took 2 minutes just to show services window.

My friend got irritated and restarted the server. After restarted, the server works fine... well, until this morning, the troubles show up again.
I remote the server and find Computer Browser service is started. I also know that Server service is responsible too for sharing folders, since it has dependency to Computer Browser service. Both of them are started this morning but no one can access the shared folder.

The question is, what is the cause of this? And how to fix it. Is there any chance of virus threat or something? Coz I believe that the server has Conficker in it.

This certainly sounds like it could be malware, it could also be some other process running on the server that's breaking things.
