Solved: Internet/Router problems
Increasingly our internet is dropping out, but at the moment I am unsure as to whether it is the internet connection or our router, which is a Thomson Speedtouch.

Very often the router has all the lights as it should have, but Network Magic says there is no connection. Skype will still be working as will emails and our Slingbox, but we can't access web pages.

Re booting the router usually seems to sort this, other times the router will lose all its lights and then restart and everything will be fine.

Is this a router problem and what would be the best router to replace this one with? Running 3 PCs via ethernet and one laptop wirelessly.

Do all 3 PCs and Laptop lose internet

possibly two problems here

can you do the following - post all four things, ipconfig /all, the two pings, and the status of each light on the router
when its alll working and when it disconnects

{ipconfig /all}
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all

-> Start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all
post back the results here

TWO Methods to do that - if you cannot access the internet with PC, then use method 2 to copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Method ONE -------------------------------------------------------------
start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Method TWO -------------------------------------------------------------

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

{Ping Tests}
Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Ping google.com
Post back the results

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Ping 209.191.93.53
post back results

As you might guess these things then work perfectly when you don't want them to, so only got some of the info so far.

It's a Speedtouch 585 v6

Is it possible that the router can't cope with an extra PC working. Originally 2 PCs and the laptop were wired but when we start the new PC that seems to be when things start to go wrong, but not always.

First ipconfig/all is when everything working

OK can you do the PING test - it may be a DNS problem and by doing the ping to name and to a number will identify if thats the case

So two sets of ping test
1) when connected all OK
2) When it disconnects

Lets look at the three PCS also seperately -
post an ipconfig /all
for each machine and label them so we know which is which

Results from The Gladiator PC which seems to be the problem, it is the latest PC to be added. Even though it wouldn't ping google, the internet was working?

First set of results were when the internet was connected and working.

I still need to get results from the other PC and laptop, but at the moment everything seems to be running normally except network magic is saying the laptop is not connected, but it is. Only got half the results from them.

this is incorrect - but the IP address works
Looks like a DNS issue maybe

But I dont understand post #5

the first set - which shows the above error - you say are when everything is working OK
but
the 2nd set of results are all OK for Pings
But you say they are when the internet is not working

seems the wrong way around to me

can you confirm - post #5
==================================
post #6 Sans Souci
both sets of results show the PC all connected and able to ping OK

All though the results appear the wrong way round, that is how they came out which is really strange.

Network magic on the laptop is saying that there is no internet connection, but it is working.

Looks like I will have to switch everything off and start again.

Getting very frustrating as individually they all seem to work, just when I start the Gladiator up it all goes funny.

Do the ethernet connections have to be plugged in using no 1 first? There are four connections, but no 1 won't lock.

Thats good then.

After a complete reboot all are working normally and are connected. May need to reinstall network magic on the laptop to see if that settles down. Obviously something not right there.

Still no idea as to what the problem is, started the Gladiator first, but normally it is not, but that shouldn't make any difference.
