Unhappy Solved: Extremely low connection!
Okay, basically I've been ringing BT for about 2 weeks trying to get them to do something about my low connection. The precedures I've taken go like this: Changed ADSL filters on all sockets, Changed routers, Changed every wire, Tried the router through my laptop in both phone sockets.

Today I had an engineer come round from openreach BT, He tested my connection in the main socket through his own laptop and gadgets and it came up as 5 meg (I pay for the up to 8meg so this is reasonable) he then tested the extension socket and the reading came up as 2 meg, he changed a faulty wire leading into this extension socket and this increased to just under 5 meg which I decided must be okay.

Upon testing my conncetion via both Speedtest.net and Speedtester.bt.com I am still having the same problem of getting slow internet with a reading of 0.10 - 0.15 mbps Download and a 0.38 mbps upload and a ping of 88 ms.

I want to know why when this engineer tested my connection on his laptop and gadget thingy (guessing it acts as a router/modem) the reading was 4.7 mbps (he said it would drop to this because the repair he made would have made bt's servers think there was a problem and sent bulges of connection to try and overcome it) and on both my computer and laptop it reads as low as it does. I need my internet because I am a student doing my A levels and also an avid gamer.

You did not have the engineer test his laptop with your modem or one of your computers with his "gadget thingy"? If not then I'd guess you have a problem with your modem or router (or possibly both computers).

1. Try a diffent computer and see if your speedtest resutls change

2. Are You Wired or Wireless? Try going wired and see if it changes anything

3. If all else fails it could be a time for a new ISP http://optimum.com/online/

I can't see it being both my laptop and my computer, it's only just occuring now and I've tried other routers resulting in the same problem. I don't know what it could be.

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

DSLReports

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

That's gotta be the ugliest set of results I've seen in these threads. I suppose it could be a problem with the modem, but I think BT's lines or your interior wiring are most likely the problem. Of course, you want to see what John has to say.

You said you've tried different routers. Are those routers only, or modem/router combination units? If the latter, then modem is not likely an issue.

I say pretty much what Terry said, if this is a direct wired connection, you have serious line quality issues.

If you've replaced the router, I'd try unplugging ALL the phone equipment and filters and seeing if that changes the results. My guess is probably no if this just started happening, I suspect the lines.

If the BT guy comes back, have him run the line quality test from his contraption, that will put the issue of your computer or modem to rest.

Being from the USA I wouldn't expect you to know BT very well but if it helps the routers are all BT Business 2700 HGV so I wouldn't know whether they are a combination of modem/router. See about the wiring, the engineer did make a repair which I mentioned in the starting post so I would have thought he'd realise if there was another wiring problem. Of course I'm way in over my head with these sorts of things and don't know how easy something like that would be to pick up. The engineer said firstly that it's probably a problem with the BT exchange so he'd have to drive down there and change some wires around but then he found the wire problem that he fixed, I'm wondering whether or not to dismiss that it could be a problem with BT's exchange or to just arrange for a computer tech to come round and have a look. I'm not sure my parents would be too happy with that though, last time we had a problem the tech cost £30 an hour. Oh also before this I had a Dlink router that I've tried with the same result of awful speeds. I should really change the experience thing to 'I know sweet FA shouldn't I' xD

"The BT Business Hub combines a broadband modem, router, hub and wireless access point ...".

Do you have a Network Interface Box (NIB) outside--a box where you can disconnect your interior wiring and connect a phone (or modem/router in this case)? If so, test from there and you can determine whether the problem is BT's or your interior wiring. Of course, if BT owns the interior wiring (as used to be the case in the US) or if you have a maintenance contract with them then the problem is definitely theirs. If you don't have a NIB then test as John specified.
