Solved: Can't access home network after installing latest Firefox version
The network, which was working yesterday, now is giving an error message:
\\(computername) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc.

I did the latest Firefox update this morning and now cannot access the network. Am getting a bit fed up with Fx as it seems to be crashing more and more these days which I never used to experience before.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Well, I can't imagine FF doing this, and I've installed all their updates, including the 3.5.5 update.

Can you access the Internet from this computer? Is this just a local networking issue connecting to another computer?

Let's see this on your computer and the computer you're trying to connect to.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi John

Thanks for reply. Yes, Fx was just a co-incidence, not the issue. I use the network - 3 computers - to check my websites in different versions of IE. After some experimentation yesterday, I found it was a firewall problem, simply because when I turned the firewall off, the network worked. It is a new edition of my BitDefender Total Security that has caused the problem so now all I need to do is work out how to add the network to the Whitelist. One of the computers concerned is not protected (by BitDefender) as it is not used online. Their support is good so I will contact them.

Thank you again for your reply.

Resurrected!

Still not working but am still thinking it is to do with the latest version of BitDefender Total Security 2010. They sent me the info to re-install the firewall which I did on the 2 computers concerned but it has not fixed the problem.
I have searched several of your old posts on networking and have done all the settings you advised such as Services - all are started and Automatic.
3 computers A (Lyn), B and C. BitDefender is on A and B, not C.
View Workgroup Computers: A: shows only A and C. B and C : message [networkname] is not accessible. You may not have permission etc etc.
Pinging
A firewall enabled: can ping C but B only if B firewall disabled
A firewall disabled: can ping C but B result Request timed out
B firewall enabled: can ping A and C if A firewall disabled
B firewall disabled: can ping C – A if ping to address: Request timed out and if pinged computer name, Could not find host A
C: can ping A if A firewall disabled and B if B firewall disabled if A and B firewalls enabled, Message Request timed out

I do hope you can find something in all this that will solve the problem. As you said somewhere that pinging must be fixed before anything else, I have stopped here.

Well, clearly, the firewall configurations seem to be the issue. Maybe it's time to use a different firewall if you can't get those to cooperate.

Yes - that's what I thought - just wanted another opinion. It was working fine until I installed this version of BD. Thanks.
