cannot renew IP address
When I boot up my laptop, I have no wireless internet connectivity.

If I repair the wireless connection, the process fails on the "renewing IP address" stage. However, shortly after this fails and the balloon pops up saying "limited or no connectivity" another pops up saying "connected to wireless network." Unfortunately, it there is still no connection (when I ping google, nothing happens).

I recently installed the latest drivers for the laptop's wireless device. It isn't a router issue because I'm using my other laptop to type this.

This IPCONFIG shows a good connection to a wireless router. Is this the problem machine? If this is the working machine, that is of no use to us. Post the information on the failing machine.

Does the failing machine work with a wired connection to the router?

OK, from that machine, let's expand the tests.

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Strange that you get an apparently good IP configuration but cannot ping the router. Are you sure that another computer is working with this wireless network? I ask that because the 192.168.1.2 is perfectly valid, but unusual (typically the last number for a router is 1 or 254).

Make sure you have the latest Intel driver from your PC manufacturer's web site.

If you are using Intel's Proset wireless utility try XP's Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) instead. And vice-versa. Make sure that they are not both running at the same time.

Let's try this from a command prompt.

PING 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.254

Let us know if either of those addresses respond.

Also, a stack repair seems like a good idea here.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2/SP3.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

thanks for the help so far.

i wasn't able to ping either address and the rest to installation defaults didn't work.

still doing the same thing.

boot up, then the process gets hung up when renewing for IP address. when it finishes searching, the bubbles pop up from the tray: "your device has limited or no connectivity" and then a few seconds after that "connected to wireless network. signal strength: excellent."

however, i'm still unable to connect to anything.

Run those same pings tests from the working laptop, I'd like to see the results.

The only thing that springs to mind here is a firewall that is blocking the network. Maybe malware that has damaged something, but since you're getting an IP address from the router, that's less likely.
