Solved: I need a network driver!
I just got my computer back from Geek Squad. I realized that I didn't have the "local area connection" icon at the bottom.
From there I went to device manager and looked for the driver but it wasn't there. The only thing listed was "1394 Net Adapter".
Where can I get the driver from so I connect to the internet?

Any help will be appreciated.
If you have any questions about the specs on my PC just ask!

On the side of my tower the sticker says: Gateway GT5082
I ran a program on my computer and it says: Gateway GM5084

Kinda in a state of confusion.
I looked on Gateways website for the drivers and I couldn't find them.

If you enter your serial number here
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...p?cmpid=topnav
it should show the drivers for that machine

otherwise

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/10...009053nv.shtml

see driver download link - looks like the ethernet is part of the motherboard chipset

There are three yellow question marks.

Other Devices
- Multimedia Audio Controller
- PCI Simple Communications Controller
- Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

on the list is Audio and Video - but again use the serial number entry and you will see the exact drivers for your PC
you may need modem as well

go through them all

Ok I installed the Audio driver without any problems.

When I tried installing the Video Driver I ran into some trouble.

I followed all the directions to this one point and it wont let me continue any further.

I get to the point where I have to type "C:\Cabs" in the text box.

When I do that it tells me this:

"The location you specified does not contain any device information files"
"Please enter another location or uncheck the 'Include this location in the search' box"

Like I said, I followed the instructions on the "read_me" file and it keeps messing up.

I also downloaded the file again X2 to see if it would work.
Still stopping me at the same spot.

Quote:
Overview

This is the Windows XP video driver for the computers listed in the Applicable Part Numbers section of this document.

Installation

1. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. With Control Panel in Category View, double-click Performance and Maintenance

3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, click System.

4. In the System Properties window, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

5. In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) in front of the type of device you want to install the drivers for, and then double-click the specific device to open the Properties dialog box.

6. In the Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

7. In the Welcome to the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click No, not at this time, and then click Next.

8. Click Install from a list or specific location, and then click Next.

9. In the next Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, under Search for the best driver in these locations, click to clear the check mark from Search removable media (floppy, CD-ROM...), and that verify that Include this location in your search is selected.

10. In the text field, under Include this location in your search, type: C:\Cabs. Click Next.
When you double click on the .exe file where does it save all the files ?
Does it save then in a Folder called Cabs on your C: drive
or somewhere else
like desktop or my documents

I suspect you just need to replace the path
c:\cabs
with the location you save the extracted files
you should be able to browse to that location

Ok awesome I got it!

I had to click Browse and find the exact folder rather than typing "C:\Cabs".

Now that is successfully running!

The last thing that is still yellow is:

"PCI Simple Communications Controller"

I don't know a whole lot about all of this, so I seriously thank you for all the help.

What can I do about the PCI thing I just mentioned?
