The switch would come after the router.

It does work that way, absolutely. I am using a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and the router slows it from 25Mbps to 14. The switch doesn't slow it at all so I would like to hit the switch first and then the wireless G router, if that is possible, or maybe I just need to get an access point or something. All of the network is wired, I just need wireless for two laptops and WIFI cell phones. Any suggestions??????

You only get a single public IP address from most ISP accounts. You can only have a single device connected to the cable modem. One device on that switch will work, the rest will not be able to connect.

If your router is the limitation, get a better router. I have 20mbit service, and my router easily passes the full bandwidth.
