Solved: Temperamental internet connection
I recently changed from Talk Talk to Sky Broadband and I have a 2Wire 802.11 wireless adapter. The internet connection can be very temperamental and I have spoken to Sky who can only recommend they send another router, but the connection seems to be alot more stable on my sisters Windows Vists laptop so I am thinking there is something wrong with my wirelesss adaptor which was originally supplied by BT.

I have been looking online for help and I came across this page but when I try and open the browser, it doesnt work.

My operating system is Windows XP Media Centre.

did you have the same setup with Talk Talk?
I assume Sky have just changed the router (and possibly exchange equipment) - is that correct, everything else is the same hardware
if so
How did the wireless all work before

some make and model info would help

Talk Talk were absolutely crap, thats why I left within the 30 day trial. I was with BT before and they were really good but my sister changed it to Talk Talk. My boyfriend recommended Sky so we moved with them.

We only have a Sky router, the wireless adaptor is the same one that was provided when we with BT broadband (before Talk Talk).

My wireless adaptor is a 2wire 802.11g USB Wireless LAN Card #5

do you both lose internet at the same time?
What are the lights on the router indicating when lost

when its working please post back the ipconfig /all and both ping tests
repeat when disconnects - make sure we know which is which

{ipconfig /all}
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all

-> Start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all
post back the results here

TWO Methods to do that - if you cannot access the internet with PC, then use method 2 to copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

Method ONE -------------------------------------------------------------
start > run {search bar in Vista} > cmd > ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Method TWO -------------------------------------------------------------

Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

{Ping Tests}
Start> Run {search bar in Vista}> CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Ping google.com
Post back the results

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Ping 209.191.93.53
post back results

The router is downstairs and my PC is upstairs.

I have Windows XP Media Center, when I do ipconfig /all the box appears and then disappears in a second.

I was originally with BT and the internet was perfect.

Then my sister moved to Talk Talk and the connection was extremely bad.

Now, we are with Sky & the connection is better than when we were with Talk Talk but it can be temperamental at times. I have been online and I have done many tests including changing the DNS address.

you are missing out the CMD command
type CMD - enter
then a black box should appear and stay on the screen

excellent - now we have the ipconfig info - we need to add one more ping to the list

ping 192.168.0.1

Now when it disconnects repeat the
Ipconfig /all
and the Three Pings

Can you explain what these pings are and how this helps?

And do you mean I should do all 3 pings when the internet has disconnected? Should I do it in all the same window (after the pings, I close the box and reopen)?

Sorry for the 21 Qs but knowledge is power
