Solved: Can't connect wirelessly with Sony Vaio
Hi, I'd appreciate your assistance please.

I didn't know whether to post this in this forum or the Vista one so feel free to move it.

I recently purchased a Sony VAIO laptop running on Vista and cannot get it to connect to the internet wirelessly at home using an ADDon GWAR 3500 router. The laptop shows that it is connected wirelessly to the router but not to the net. It gets this same problem even when I disable security.

I have a desktop (running XP) that can connect fine which uses a Belkin usb wireless adapter.

The laptop will connect to the net if I connect it to the router via lan cable.

I have tried the laptop at other people's houses, and it connects in seconds, which is really frustrating, also I tried a Toshiba router using XP and it connected at my house without problem.

In the end, I contacted Sony and they took the laptop back and could find no fault and returned it to me in the same state. Sony have suggested there is a fault with the Vista. I'm at the end of my tether and I'm even thinking about putting XP on there. I have tried a friend's Vaio which was the same model, and had the same problem so somewhere there is contention between the Vaio and this ADDon router.

Having searched other logs, I can see that you usually ask for certain info, so I've posted it below. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

i would say it may be a firewall issue - however, you say the machine works fine on other wireless networks

can you dowload and install
http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php

use print screen to post back an image of the screen with this program running

I assume bpm addon - thats your wireless signal from the router

if so then it see the wireless signal OK - just need to work out why it will not connect

- zonealarm maybe blocking

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or Windows 7.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Just re-reading your post
Other machines work OK wirelessly
Your machine works on other wireless networks OK

what is the model ?

anything else with vista connecting to your wireless router

Take the Secruity off the wireless again and delete any wireless profiles on the PC

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. If that means an update, then reset it to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

Then, for Vista, see this JohnWill post, especially the DHCP Broadcast flag part.

It works !!!!!!!

A million thank yous.

It was the JohnWill post that finally fixed what Sony couldn't sort for me. After months of torture I can finally play with my new toy. The fact that you sorted it in less than a day of me joining the site is nothing short of sensational.

I have spent weeks of my life trying to resolve this, but I know where I'll come next time.

Once again, thank you. Do you accept donations to the upkeep of the service?

Cheers

Ally
