My PC just connects, generally restart the modem, plug it in and go.

I have just been reading the vigin website and it seems I need a CD to get the wireess to work
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/broa...using/wireless connection.php
is this necessary, do you know where i can get one from?

Thanks

which are you , and did you not get a disk with the router?

Quote:
If you're an existing customer, the new set-up disk supplied with your wireless package should be used. From now on, don't use any previously supplied installer disks.
If you're adding a PC or laptop to an existing wireless home network, go straight to Step 8 and follow the instructions.

You do not need any CD to get a router going. Do you have internet access through the router with an ethernet connected computer yet?

The internet came with a modem, but no router but i manged to get hold of one and am trying to get it working, if nothing else just so I can plug both my machines into it. But reading virgins website it seems i need a wireless router install CD, unless any of you know how to set it up manually?

Thanks

My post # 6 tells how to start setting it up manually. If you have DSL you may have to specify (in the WAN section) PPPoE and your account/password. Or, if your modem is actually a modem/router combination unit using the same LAN IP address range as your new router another change is needed.

Whats the make and model (exact model include any version info)

As i say, i have managed to get other people working on NTL (which is now virgin media) and used shop purchased routers. But maybe worth looking at the T&Cs of your agreement with virgin

anyway post the make and model

I tried it as per post 6 and with the router in the chain it no longer could find the Internet. I then tried with the router install CD and had the same trouble (and tried all three network choices, not sure which one is right, see earlier post for details). And so as I can't get that far I can't access the router from my machine?!

I think I listed the make and model of the router in earlier posts, i'm at work at the moment so can't check, just know is v.3.

Thanks for all your help, have set aside this evening to get it sorted! Thanks again!

Oh yes , so you did , and i posted link to manual

When connected direct to the modem, do an ipconfig /all and save the results – make a note of the IP Address

So
Connect the modem to the router
connect PC to the router via cable
turn every thing OFF
switch on modem, then router, then boot PC- allow each device to settle before turning next item on

Log into the router
Open a Interent explorer page
http://www.routerlogin.net
enter admin for the router user name and password for the router password,

Now we are in the router - configuration

the frst question Page 3-4 - does your internet require a login
whe you connect direct to the modem - do you need to put in a username and password
IF not - then set to no
set the IP and DNS to automatic

IF it does need a username and password
Click Yes
and type that information into the router
See Page 3-6
leave everything else to automatic

Next Jump to Page 5-1
Click on the connection status button

Page 5-3
fig 5-2
shows the connection status screen
we need to see that you have an IP there
supplied by virgin
It should be similar to the one obtained when connected to modem the last number or two may be different

See if you can get that far this evening and then post back results

Once we have you connected via a cable – we can then look at setting up the wireless configuration – BUT lets get the basic router connected

many thanks chaps for all your help, finally managed to get the wireless working tonight (albeit with the help of a friend)! very releived.

One slight thing I have noticed is that the internet speed seems a little slower then before, i guess its becuase its split between two machines and a iphone, but was wondering if this is normal as none of them are working hard, if only one is on and just web browsing?

Thanks again for all your help. Really appreciated!
