have you checked the wireless is switched on - not sure what the option is on that machine - some have a physical switch others use a F key

also

post make and models of router/modem / pc

check WZC is running
have a read here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871122

I have a note (unconfirmed) that the Thinkpad wireless switch is the Fn + F5 key combination.

Many thanks, the wireless was switched on, but following the Microsoft help link I was able to get it working. Thank yo very much!
Any help with getting the wireless working would be great. Im running off of a virgin media cable modem which I currently have to plug into either my laptop
Details can be found here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT
or my desktop (which is now a glorified media machine – IBM Netvista P4 2.6, 1 Gb ram, XP pro
I have a Netgear WGT624 wireless router (which I have never managed to get working properly) and a Netgear WGP606 print server which also works as a switch or a wireless bridge (This has worked perfecty in the past).
The ideal network would be to have the WGT624 plugged into the modem, then the WGP606 plugged into this with the desktop plugged directly into this. The laptop I would like to be wireless and have access to the print server.
This all said I would be happy to just have one of them working as a switch after th modem so I can plug both machines in at once as currently I have to reset the modem each time I move the network cable between machines!

which version do you have
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1297

I would reset the wireless router to factory defaults

then connect the modem to the router
on V4 - thats a Yellow connector

see how that works OUT - when i have set up on virgin (NTL ) in the past they have just worked out the box

The wireless signal is called netgear by default
This is the setup manual for V4

Pretty much what etaf has said, but since I've already typed it ...

You lost me there. A switch connected to the modem would do you no good unless you paid your ISP for multiple public IP addresses. To get the router working ...

Reset the router to factory default settings.
Unplug the modem and router and shut down computer(s).
Connect modem to router's WAN (Internet, Modem) port and connect computer(s) to router LAN port(s).
Plug in modem.
Plug in router.
Boot computer(s).
You should now have internet access on the computer(s).

You can then login to the router and configure the wireless--suggest set the SSID to something you want; test the wireless connection; then encrypt it, preferably with WPA(s)-PSK--and use AES if possible, but TKIP is OK.

The WGP606 is a wireless print server, so it would connect to the router by wireless and to your printer by USB (or parallel?).

Thanks for all your help guys.

The router is v3. Im afriad Im stuck =at the first hurdle, how do i reset the router to factory defaults. Im not sure how to access it from my machine to do so. I read somewhere to plug it into the pc and type 192.168.1.1 in a browser but this just results in the software saying it cant connect to the internet.

Thanks again for all your help, really appreciate it!

User manual for V3
http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/wgt6...al_25Apr05.pdf

Page 2-7
shows you the connections on the back
You will see four lan connections and 1 internet connection
connect the modem to that connection

the reset button is also shown

Page 3-3 shows you how to login to the router

But I would connect the PC to one of the 4 cable ports and try it

switch the modem off and the router off and the PC off
turn on the modem - make sure all the lights are showing correct status
turn on the router- make sure all the lights are showing correct status
turn on and boot up the PC

it may just work , depending on the PC settings
but if not - then we need toset the PC up with a network connection

Hey, just found the reset button, very discreet to say the least! Will get stuck into the rest at the first moment I have free. Thanks for the help, fingers crossed that after the reset it will be more tactile to my touch! Will let you know how I get on.

you may want to read the manual on setting up so you get to know the interface and also if you think the default are wrong for your ISP settings

Right, I tried it by shutting everything down and starting them up slowly but unfortunately it wasnt that stright forward. So I have gone to the install CD but I have fallen at one of the first hurdles - which network adapter should i use?

RAS Async Adapter

Intel(R) PRO wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Intel(R) PRO/1000 PL Network Connection

Think I tried the wireless once and it all went wrong (and may have been the reason for the first question) and I tried the latter one, but think the setup disc crashed so not sure if it worked or not.

I look frward to your response and help, thanks again!

IS this a NEW setup
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/wire...aqs.php#faq-13
OK - so we need to go through the settings

the virgin media modem (as i say only played with NTL - before they where taken over)
When you connect your PC up - I assume you plug in the LAN cable and it works

what do you do on the PC to connect - do you need a username and password - or does it just connect?
