Another Windows 7-Windows xp sharing files problem
Hi,
I know there are several other posts on these forums regarding Windows 7-xp networking, however, I still could not solve my problem after looking at them.

My desktop is running XP and is connected to the router with a wire. My laptop is running Windows 7 and is wirelessly connected to the network. My internet works just fine. It is just sharing files over the network that is the problem. When my laptop was running Xp there was no problem sharing files. The folders and printers on my desktop that I want to share are already share enabled for sharing.

After looking at these and other forums, I made sure all the necessary preferences were checked off in the advanced settings for the network and sharing center and that both pcs were using the same workgroup name (i.e. both are called WORKGROUP). My laptop detects my desktop computer, but when I click to access it, I get an error message saying "Windows cannot access Desktop-Study, check spelling of the name. Otherwise there may be a problem with your network." Clicking on Diagnose does nothing. To which name is it referring to? I made sure to spell both workgroup names correctly...

When on my desktop, I click on view workgroup computers and it freezes and I then get an error message saying "workgroup not available..."

Undoubtedly, I am doing something wrong or am missing some important step and any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Please keep in mind that I am a novice when dealing with computers, networking etc..

Thank you,
Mike

The name being used by the desktop computer for the network.

On the XP desktop.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following command followed the Enter key:

NBTSTAT -n (Note there is a space between the T and -)

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.
